2023 could be a fruitful year for 18+ LEGO sets

Since the LEGO Group’s classification of 18+ models, the annual selection of adult-focused creations has grown every year, including in 2023 so far. 

In 2020, models from several LEGO themes from Marvel to the newly renamed Icons were released with the debut of the 18+ rating, denoting which sets are intended and designed for an older audience. It still covered topics from pop culture including superheroes but with black boxes and more focus on display rather than play. 

2020 had 23 18+ LEGO sets, which more than doubled to 53 in 2021, though 2020’s selection started in April rather than in January. The LEGO Botanical Collection debuted in 2021 with the release of 10280 Flower Bouquet and 10281 Bonsai Tree too. 

In 2022, that number increased again to 58 with two of those sets being gifts-with-purchase. Since we’re only halfway into the first month of 2023, with an idea of what to expect in January and February, let’s focus on models released in the first two months of every year, with data organised into the table below. This doesn’t include 2020 since that annual selection started in April. 

So far, we’re on track to see just as many 18+ LEGO sets in 2023 as in previous years, though we’re not done with January yet so there could be more surprises in store for the future, but this remains unconfirmed.
