Look past the errors: 75337 AT-TE Walker is one of the best LEGO Star Wars sets out right now

For all the complaints about errors with its minifigures, 75337 AT-TE Walker is still one of the best LEGO Star Wars sets available right now.

While this summer’s 75337 AT-TE Walker has finally brought us a Phase II Commander Cody minifigure, alongside four other Clone Troopers and three Battle Droids – in what the LEGO Group has referred to as a ‘gigantic battle pack’ – there are still those that have criticised its characters, primarily for the execution of their designs.

Some of those complaints are certainly valid – especially where the printing on the box doesn’t match up to the physical minifigures – but they’re also missing the point. With or without its minifigures, 75337 AT-TE Walker is one of the best LEGO Star Wars sets money can buy right now, and it’s definitely the best iteration of this vehicle we’ve ever had at this scale.

Zavvi kindly provided the copy of LEGO Star Wars 75337 AT-TE Walker you see here – head over to pre-order it for 25% off using code LEGO10OFF, valid on December 12 only.

We said as much in our initial review of the set in the summer, but Zavvi has kindly provided us with another copy of 75337 AT-TE Walker, allowing us to revisit all that’s so great about this set (opinions and editorial remain our own!). Coming in at 1,082 pieces, this version of the Republic walker looks – at first glance – pretty similar to the last, 2013’s 75019 AT-TE. But on closer inspection, it has an ace up its sleeve.

That’s in the fully-fleshed-out interior 75337 AT-TE Walker is rocking, which builds successfully on the limited interior of 75019 AT-TE. Where early walkers had minimal space inside, with much of the build dedicated to holding together the vehicle’s shell, 75337 AT-TE Walker is smartly designed around including as much internal space as possible – and then making it easily accessible.

Indeed, there’s space front and back to fill this AT-TE up with all the Clone Troopers included in the set (and then some), along with details like thermal detonators, blaster storage and even a metallic silver mug. It all brings the walker to life to a greater degree than any AT-TE before it, while not sacrificing any of its external aesthetics: it also looks like the best LEGO AT-TE so far, forming a solid shell that’s as free of gaps as arguably possible.

So, those minifigures. Included in 75337 AT-TE Walker are Commander Cody, three 212th Clone Troopers, a Clone Gunner and three Battle Droids. In terms of quantity and character selection, you genuinely couldn’t ask for more (beyond, say, an Obi-Wan Kenobi minifigure – but we’ve surely all got plenty of those already).

The hang-ups ultimately come in the fine detail across those characters. The Clone Troopers stylistically match the recent 501st and 187th Legions, which offers nice consistency for army building, regardless of your thoughts on that homogenous blend of live action and animated armour. But the topmost helmet printing shown across the box for the 212th troopers doesn’t quite line up with the real thing, where the tip of the orange arrow disappears behind the brow.

To this we say… okay? The problem really lies with the incongruency between packaging and reality, because the minifigure itself is perfectly fine. If we wanted a 1:1 recreation of a Clone Trooper, we’d buy a Hot Toys figure. LEGO minifigures, like LEGO sets, are just artistic approximations of their source material. And we’re not going to let one of the best LEGO Star Wars sets out right now pass by just because of that printing.

You can add 75337 AT-TE Walker – and its bounty of minifigures – to your LEGO Star Wars collection by pre-ordering a copy at Zavvi, where it’s currently available for £20 off. For today only (December 12), using code LEGO10OFF will slash another 10% off its price, bringing the final total down to just £89.99, or a full 25% off its RRP.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
