The biggest LEGO The Lord of the Rings sets ever – March 2025
With the reveal of LEGO Icons 10354 The Lord of the Rings: The Shire, where does it land in the rankings of the biggest Middle-earth sets ever made?
Size doesn’t always matter but, when it comes to LEGO sets, it certainly makes a build that much more impressive. LEGO The Lord of the Rings had some mighty builds in its classic theme but it truly came back with a bang with the enormous 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell and the towering 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr.
Now, a third set has come to complete a trilogy of The Lord of the Rings sets in the LEGO Icons theme, in the form of 10354 The Lord of the Rings: The Shire. But where does it rank on the list of the biggest ever LEGO The Lord of the Rings sets ever.
10 – 79008 Pirate Ship Ambush
Price: £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 Pieces: 756 Year: 2013

79008 Pirate Ship Ambush takes LEGO The Lord of the Rings to the high seas in a 756-piece ship, complete with nine minifigures (five of which were unique to the set upon its release). While it looks good on display, it also came with a ton of interactive features, including weapons to fend off brick-built attackers.
9 – 9473 The Mines of Moria
Price: £69.99 / $79.99 / €79.99 Pieces: 776 Year: 2012

Recreating the tense battle against a horde of goblins that would send Gandalf flying into the arms of the Balrog, 9473 The Mines of Moria is next on this list, just barely beating its predecessor at 776 pieces. That includes nine minifigures, including the Fellowship and two goblin enemies – as well as the hulking cave troll.
8 – 79014 Dol Guldur Battle
Price: £69.99 / $69.99 / €79.99 Pieces: 797 Year: 2013

Another battle immortalised in LEGO form, 79014 Dol Guldur Battle is made up of 797 pieces. Returning to scenes from the Hobbit trilogy, Gandalf and Radagast face down Azog and his evil henchmen. There’s an impressive amount of detail included in the fairly flat structure of the building, lending it well to both play and display.
7 – 79010 The Goblin King Battle
Price: £79.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 Pieces: 841 Year: 2012

With 841 pieces, we get another hulking figure with the Goblin King in 79010 The Goblin King Battle, as well as a brightly coloured backdrop to display him, the goblins, and the dwarves on. There are plenty of play features included as well to recreate the fast-paced escape that Gandalf, Ori, Nori, and Dori make from the goblin dwelling.
6 – 79018 The Lonely Mountain
Price: £99.99 / $129.99 / €129.99 Pieces: 866 Year: 2014

Returning to the Hobbit once again, 79018 The Lonely Mountain is made up of 866 pieces and recreates the gold-fuelled battle against the dragon Smaug. The centrepiece of the build is the red dragon himself, along with the throne and the most prized gem of all, the Arkenstone – but there are also plenty of interactive traps baked into the build to gear it towards play.
5 – 9474 The Battle of Helm’s Deep
Price: £99.99 / $129.99 / €139.99 Pieces: 1,368 Year: 2012

The first set on this list to really lean into display, 9474 The Battle of Helm’s Deep is made up of 1,368 pieces. The ultimate battle of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy features all the key players fans know and love, as well as sturdy battlements where the action took place.
4 – 10354 The Lord of the Rings: The Shire
Price: £229.99 / $269.99 / €269.99 Pieces: 2,017 Year: 2025

The latest addition to this list is 10354 The Lord of the Rings: The Shire, coming in at 2,017 pieces. Due for release on April 2 for LEGO Insiders, the brick-built Shire balances play and display, with one central build of Bag End and various other side-builds picking out familiar locations from the Shire.
3 – 10237 Tower of Orthanc
Price: £169.99 / $199.99 / €199.99 Pieces: 2,359 Year: 2013

The largest of the classic LEGO The Lord of the Rings sets, 10237 Tower of Orthanc is made up of 2,359 pieces. Once it was the largest brick-built tower from Middle-earth, but was soon beaten out by…
2 – 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr
Price: £399.99 / $4459.99 / €459.99 Pieces: 5,471 Year: 2024

Many might assume that 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr is the largest set on this list, due to its sheer height. All of its 5,471 pieces go into reaching the Eye of Sauron far into the sky (or shelf), but there are also plenty of details to enjoy along the way, in both the exterior and interior.
1 – 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell
Price: £429.99 / $499.99 / €499.99 Pieces: 6,167 Year: 2023

However, the number one spot goes to 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell, with 6,167 pieces. The piece count goes more into landscaping and details than height, with intricate tiles coming together on the roof and fun references to the movies tucked into every nook and crevice of the build.
