Building LEGO Art Sunflowers literally follows in van Gogh’s shoes
The building process of LEGO Art 31215 Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers has been carefully created to follow in Vincent van Gogh’s shoes – or brush strokes.
The reveal of 31215 Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers showed off every yellow feature and dynamic angle of the front of the set but there are even secrets to enjoy when you turn the set over and take a closer look at the back. The LEGO Art team worked closely with the Vincent van Gogh Museum to capture every detail of the original painting as possible, including getting a replica of the original sent to them for extra accuracy.
This allowed them to see details from the artwork that might otherwise get missed, including an extra wooden attachment nailed to the back of the painting. Van Gogh realised as he was painting that there wouldn’t be room on the first canvas for the rendering of the sunflowers that he wanted to capture, so he added an extra wooden slat to give himself more room to play with.

“On the LEGO model, what we’ve done is that we’ve also incorporated that in the building process,” said LEGO designer Stijn Oom while speaking at LEGO Fan Media Days, as captured by YouTuber DuckBricks, pointing out some extra bricks added to the back that offer the same effect as the physical painting. “It’s a really amazing experience building through this how he would have painted it – building up the layers, starting with the background, and continuing with the different flowers.”
That means that building 31215 Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers will allow you to apply bricks in the same way that van Gogh applied his brush, slowly building up your own masterpiece and following in the iconic painter’s footsteps.
To be among the first to do so, pre-order 31215 Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers ahead of its release on March 1, 2025 for £169.99 / $199.99 / €199.99 today.
