Can you play LEGO Super Mario without the titular plumber?

LEGO Super Mario may have just introduced multiplayer to the brick-based real-life video game, but can you still have fun with a friend without the iconic red plumber?

Those who prefer Mario’s taller brother will likely be pleased that 71387 Adventures with Luigi Starter Course is now available, and one LEGO YouTuber has decided to see if two of the character controllers can work just as well as his more familiar brother.

Just2good published the results of this experiment in a new video after obtaining a second copy of the new starter course. That might be because, as discussed in our review, 71387 Adventures with Luigi Starter Course is a much better introduction to the theme than the earlier 71360 Adventures with Mario Starter Course.

You can watch the experiment for yourself by clicking above but in short, two LEGO Luigi controllers will work just as well as the more familiar duo of brotherly plumbers. This also means that two Marios will be able to take down Bowser as quick as the usual configuration, meaning any two LEGO Super Mario characters work for the multiplayer gameplay.

This is especially useful for those who are just getting into the theme and may prefer the new version of the starter course and have friends who face that same dilemma. You’ll be able to play the brick-based game just as effectively by connecting them via Bluetooth in the corresponding app.

Super Mario 71387 Adventures with Luigi Starter Course is available now as well as a new wave of obstacle expansion sets to challenge any two characters. These include 71388 Boss Sumo Bro Topple Tower, which we’ve reviewed to see how the cheaper model compares to the rest of the summer 2021 wave.
