Confused about LEGO Ideas 21340 Tales of the Space Age’s green section? You’re not alone
The key change from the original design of LEGO Ideas 21340 Tales of the Space Age is confusing some people, so here’s what you need to know.
The latest LEGO Ideas reveal, 21340 Tales of the Space Age, has plenty of stunning details, leaning into the colourful visual style of retro sci-fi posters. However, one key change between the original design from Jan Woznica has left some fans confused.
“Can’t say I care for the new green one. Looks like the London Underground symbol,” wrote mirrorzreflectyou on Reddit.

Other Reddit users added that the green section of the set ‘definitely looks off’ and ‘definitely isn’t clear enough in what it is supposed to be’. However, we’ve taken a closer look at the LEGO Group’s official description for a definitive answer on what the green part of 21340 is meant to depict.
The description of the LEGO Ideas set promises ‘an observatory for viewing comets and shooting stars, a moon base and lunar eclipse, a shuttle blasting through space, and a black hole’. As the other three sections clearly portray the first three of these four scenes, we can only deduce that the green section is a black hole.
The green outline could well be a representation of the light usually seen around a black hole (known as the photon sphere). While they wouldn’t ordinarily be green, rocket ships also aren’t usually pink and purple, so we think we can forgive the artistic license here, as it certainly completes the palette of colours throughout the set.
What’s more, not everyone was confused by the green inclusion.
“I love the green one with the black terrain. It’s the most alien looking. And what’s the point of space exploration if not to find and learn new things?” – Reddit user orbit222 commented.
