Eight retiring LEGO sets to prioritise across Black Friday

Wondering what to prioritise this Black Friday to maximise your LEGO purchases? Here are eight retiring LEGO sets you should snap up before they’re gone for good.

Hundreds of LEGO sets are leaving shelves this year, with many of them already sold out at LEGO.com. First to fall online are the likes of 76193 The Guardians’ Ship, 10292 The Friends Apartments and 75336 Inquisitor Transport Scythe, all of which are marked as ‘sold out’ in the UK and Europe – and are very, very unlikely to ever be available again (at least at LEGO.com).

You might still be able to find them through third-party retailers like John Lewis, shopDisney and Zavvi, and it’s worth keeping an eye on our main LEGO Black Friday page for all the latest offers from across the web. But as the clock winds down on the rest of the LEGO sets due to retire this year, your best bet for scoring this year’s Black Friday gifts-with-purchase is prioritising the retiring sets still available through official channels.

With that in mind, here are eight sets you should bump to the top of your shopping list when the official LEGO Black Friday deals start tomorrow, November 24. But first, here’s a quick reminder of all the offers you’ll find at LEGO.com from midnight…

Price: £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 Pieces: 1,087 Release date: June 1, 2019 Link: Buy now

This mainstay of LEGO space-inspired sets has been on shelves for four and a half years, so you’d be forgiven for thinking it would be around forever. Alas, 10266 NASA Apollo 11 Lunar Lander is in the midst of its final voyage through the stars, and will soon be relegated to the long list of retired LEGO sets. From its rocky display base to its shiny gold elements and pair of minifigure astronauts, real-world space sets don’t get much better than this. You can also score £20 / $20 / €20 off with a discount code from the Insiders Rewards Centre through November 27.

76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck

Price: £79.99 / $89.99 / €89.99 Pieces: 1,222 Release date: May 1, 2022 Link: Buy now

The LEGO Group is really still just starting to dabble in video game series (at least beyond Mario), and 76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck is the one and only model inspired by Guerrilla Games’ post-apocalyptic PlayStation franchise. It’s also phenomenal value even at full price, includes one of the best LEGO minifigures of 2022 – and maybe of all time – in Aloy, and deserves a space in your collection whether you’ve played the games or not. Add it to your basket this Black Friday to get at least some way towards those freebies.

10273 Haunted House

Price: £259.99 / $299.99 / €299.99 Pieces: 3,231 Release date: June 1, 2020 Link: Buy now

This LEGO Adventurers-themed fairground ride has already sold out in the US (try your local LEGO Store for best results), but is still available – for now – in the UK and Europe. With two more classic ‘90s characters about to arrive on shelves in 10326 Natural History Museum (Dr. Kilroy) and 21344 The Orient Express Train (Pippin Reed), now is the perfect time to snap up 10273 Haunted House before it’s gone forever.

60398 Family House and Electric Car

Price: £46.99 / $59.99 / €52.99 Pieces: 3,231 Release date: June 1, 2023 Link: Buy now

Believe it or not, this summer 2023 LEGO City set is already on the way out, effectively recreating the trajectory of last year’s 60347 Grocery Store. And it’s definitely worth grabbing while you can if you’re building a LEGO city layout, because 60398 Family House and Electric Car represents that rare slice of real life that comes around all too little in the LEGO City theme.

76911 007 Aston Martin DB5

Price: £19.99 / $19.99 / €24.99 Pieces: 298 Release date: August 1, 2022 Link: Buy now

One of two LEGO Speed Champions vehicles to kick-start the line of sets inspired by movies, 76911 007 Aston Martin DB5 is arguably the most recognisable car in the entire theme. It’s also incredibly good value, includes the first-ever James Bond minifigure, and is – for reasons unknown – retiring after only 18 months on shelves, even while older Speed Champions sets survive into 2024. Whether for yourself or as a gift, this is well worth snapping up this Black Friday.

10293 Santa’s Visit

Price: £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 Pieces: 1,445 Release date: October 1, 2021 Link: Buy now

All eyes may be on this year’s 10325 Alpine Lodge at the moment, but don’t forget to grab the oldest LEGO Winter Village set currently on shelves while it’s still available. 10293 Santa’s Visit is arguably the best of the three out right now, offering the quintessential Christmas Eve experience, but its time is short. Pair it with 40499 Santa’s Sleigh for best results.

75323 The Justifier

Price: £149.99 / $169.99 / €169.99 Pieces: 1,022 Release date: August 1, 2022 Link: Buy now

This LEGO Star Wars set has already disappeared in the UK and Europe (third-party retailers are your friend now), but there’s still time to pick it up in the US. 75323 The Justifier is one of only two sets hooked directly to The Bad Batch, so if Disney’s animated follow-up to The Clone Wars has piqued your interest, this is one you might regret passing up six, 12 or even 18 months from now. And you know the price is only going to go in one direction on the aftermarket…

10497 Galaxy Explorer

Price: £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 Pieces: 1,254 Release date: August 1, 2022 Link: Buy now

A vocal minority of LEGO fans spent years calling for more Classic Space sets, and the LEGO Group finally answered in August last year with 10497 Galaxy Explorer. This celebrated ode to the retro theme arrived to critical acclaim, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a bad word to say about it. But the 1,254-piece redux of 1979’s 497 Galaxy Explorer is already setting off to new horizons, a phrase which here means the secondary market. Don’t miss out.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
