Every LEGO Ideas set in production – December 2023

A total of 10 different LEGO Ideas sets are now in the production phase, including the two projects newly greenlit as part of the first 2023 review. Here’s a reminder of what’s currently in the works…

Seven different mainline LEGO Ideas sets launched in 2023, starting with 21338 A-Frame Cabin and ending with the newly-released 21344 The Orient Express Train. Sandwiched somewhere near the end of that run was 40595 Tribute to Galileo Galilei, based on a contest-winning design by LEGO Ideas user Firecracker, bringing the final number of LEGO Ideas sets for this year up to eight.

We could be on course for a similar number in 2024 – which is already confirmed to start things off on January 1 with 21345 Polaroid OneStep SX-70 Camera – as a total of 10 different LEGO Ideas sets are now in production. Some of those were picked in the conventional way, reaching 10,000 supporters on the crowdsourcing platform, while others will have reached shelves by winning contests.

Your Family Tree

Rumoured to be our second LEGO Ideas set arriving in January 2024, Your Family Tree was designed by Ivan Guerrero – whose name you will probably recognise from 21324 123 Sesame Street and 40533 Cosmic Cardboard Adventures, both of which were his idea – for a family-themed contest hosted in conjunction with Target. It took top prize in December 2022, and the finished model is said to retail for $79.99 in the US.

Dragon’s Keep: Journey’s End

Dragon’s Keep: Journey’s End should be enough to satiate LEGO Castle fans hankering for a follow-up to 2022’s 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle, as well as fantasy fans wanting a taste of tabletop gaming with their LEGO. That’s because the contest-winning set by Lucas Bolt is hooked to the 50th anniversary of roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons, which means it’s effectively nailed on for a 2024 release.

Red Telephone Box

One of two new sets given the green light as part of the second LEGO Ideas 2022 review, John Cramp’s Red Telephone Box captures a quintessential slice of British life on a very large scale. Whether the accompanying post box and lamppost make their way into the finished set remains to be seen, but either way, this is an icon of the British isles that wouldn’t look out of place next to 10258 London Bus (even if they won’t match in scale).

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Simon Scott’s The Nightmare Before Christmas was also given the nod in the second 2022 review, and initial suspicions were that it would be fast-tracked in time for the movie’s 30th anniversary in 2023. Instead, it now seems more likely to arrive in time for the 31st (or perhaps even the 32nd) anniversary of Tim Burton’s seminal, seasonal animated film.

Jaws

The LEGO Ideas team also approved a pair of sets as part of the third 2022 review, the first of which is Johnny Campbell’s ode to Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster classic Jaws. It’s the clearest sign yet that the LEGO Group is happy to embrace IPs targeted to older audiences for its 18+ range, given the movie’s 15 rating in the UK and its positively gory sequences.

Cat

The LEGO Group is seemingly already preparing to go all-in on animals in 2024 with the Fauna Collection, but it’s digging a little further into domesticity with Damian Andres’s simply-titled Cat. The initial pitch for this near-life-size sculpt is based on the fan designer’s Siamese-Birman cross. Whether the LEGO Ideas team will stick to that specific breed for the finished model remains to be seen.

Reading, Reading, Reading

Earlier this year, the LEGO Ideas team hosted a contest to celebrate Singles’ Day, tasking builders to come up with a scene that represents a fun solo activity. FR_AN’s Reading, Reading, Reading snatched first place, and will now serve as the template for a future LEGO Ideas gift-with-purchase, perhaps sometime in 2024.

Disney Magic

Disney’s 100th anniversary year may be coming to a close, but the LEGO Group is planning to keep the party going into 2024 (or maybe 2025) with 2A2A’s Disney Magic, which won a thematic challenge to celebrate the House of Mouse earlier this year. Depicting classic Disney moments around a large-scale Mickey build, the model features a handful of iconic Disney characters as minifigures.

Twilight: Cullen House

The LEGO Ideas team has this week revealed two new sets that are entering production from the first 2023 review, the first of which is Nick Micheels’ Twilight: Cullen House. Delving into a series that briefly captivated a generation of readers and moviegoers, this model has apparently partly been chosen for its architectural qualities, as the LEGO Group hopes to reach both Twilight fans and those of us just looking for a cool LEGO house.

The Botanical Garden

The LEGO Group apparently saw the response to 41757 Botanical Garden and said, “Yes, more of that please,” because Valentina Bima’s The Botanical Garden looks pretty similar to that LEGO Friends set at first glance (only on a much larger scale). This model also seemingly breaks the unwritten rules of LEGO Ideas through its modular format – other modular building-adjacent sets have always been rejected – so it’ll be interesting to see whether the finished model keeps the same pavement and lampposts.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
