First trailer for The Flash teases a strong swan song for the current DCU

The first trailer for DC’s long-awaited The Flash debuted during last night’s Superbowl, teasing a strong swan song for the current iteration of the DC cinematic universe.

James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently helming a reshaping of DC’s screen output, which will include recasting and rebooting most of the franchise’s major characters. That means The Flash – which stars Ezra Miller in the title role, and has been in development for nearly a decade – will be one of the final films to hit screens within the DCU as it stands now, alongside Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

It’s probably quite handy for Safran and Gunn, then, that the focus of The Flash seems to be on the Flashpoint graphic novel, which involves Barry Allen getting up to all kinds of time-travel and universe-resetting shenanigans. Check out the first trailer for the movie below, which also introduces Sasha Calle as Supergirl and features two different Batmen.

Both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck will appear in The Flash as Batman, which could only be the result of aforementioned time-travel hijinks. It means we’re also seeing the return of Michael Shannon as General Zod, reprising his role from Man of Steel a full decade on.

“Worlds collide in The Flash when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past,” reads the official synopsis. “But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to.

“That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?”

The Flash has been a long time coming for multiple reasons, with delays prompted by COVID-19, changes in director and post-production issues – including off-set legal problems for its star Miller. Originally planned to arrive in cinemas in March 2018, The Flash will now arrive on screens on June 16, 2023.

At least one LEGO set is currently said to be on the way for the film, in the form of 76221 Batmobile: Flash Tracking. Based on the presence of Keaton’s Batman in this trailer, here’s hoping for a minifigure-scale version of 76139 1989 Batmobile. You can also glimpse Keaton’s Batwing in the trailer, which is rumoured to be coming as a separate set this summer (albeit based on Tim Burton’s original movies).

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
