Five franchises that stand a chance in second LEGO Ideas ’90s challenge

The second LEGO Ideas ’90s challenge will see its five finalists revealed tomorrow, and here are franchises that stand a chance at being picked.

The ’90s have two guaranteed future spots in the LEGO Ideas portfolio from a pair of challenges. The first has already seen its finalists revealed, with five projects between 1,000 and 5,000 pieces all in the running for a future set.

The second challenge is smaller overall and has only accepted submissions between 200 and 1,000 pieces. There are still 271 hoping to get an official model, and with the five finalists being announced tomorrow, it’s time to predict which have been picked by the LEGO Ideas team.

Our first attempt at guessing the finalists for the bigger challenge saw us correctly predict one of the five finalist franchises. Based on what was picked in the first challenge in terms of the subject material and avoiding those franchises again, here are five that we think will be picked in the second challenge.

Stay tuned to Brick Fanatics, as we’ll soon see just how accurate our second round of predictions was when the finalists are announced tomorrow. In the meantime, here are five franchises we can see being picked.

Futurama

With the rumour of The Simpsons returning to the portfolio later this year and the fan demand for LEGO Futurama, there’s at least some chance that Matt Groening’s other animated series will be picked as a finalist in this LEGO Ideas challenge.

There are multiple submissions in the second ’90s challenge that would make for great sets, but after 76419 Hogwarts Castle and Grounds, we’re most drawn to BrickStability‘s recreation of the Planet Express building with two accompanying minifigures. It leaves the door open for the LEGO Group to explore the franchise outside of LEGO Ideas in the future to complete the crew.

Twister

After The Fifth Element, Edward Scissorhands and Jumanji were selected as finalists for the first challenge, it’s clear that movies are more eligible than other franchises for finalists in these challenges.

Of the many movie-inspired models submitted for the challenge, Blocksmiths‘ diorama take on Twister would inspire something similar to 21350 Jaws, and it even proposes a built-in play feature.

Stargate

Specifically looking at the fact that The Fifth element has a genuine chance of being picked for a model in the first challenge, Captain Mutant’s latest effort to get a LEGO Ideas Stargate set might have a shot at achieving this goal at long last.

The consistent demand for a Stargate model on the platform might also inspire the LEGO Group to finally take a chance on the beloved science fiction movie in a display-centric model that has plenty of room for portal-based play features. Oddly, this project has been allowed in the challenge as an approved IP, despite the fact that a rival construction toy company holds the license currently. It may be that the LEGO Group had the approval for the license at the start of the challenge, but the status of that approval has since changed.

Baywatch

While LEGO City is currently dipping its toes into lifeguards with 60453 Lifeguard Beach Rescue Truck, it probably won’t hurt Baywatch’s chances of being picked for a smaller LEGO Ideas set in this challenge. The original series lasted from 1989 to 2001, seemingly qualifying it for this ’90s challenge.

Either way, BrickStability has a Baywatch build in the running for a model, proposing a truck and hut in a simply appealing set that would be useful for city builders to collect. Whether LEGO City’s current model will get in the way has yet to be seen though.

The Truman Show

Peter Weir’s The Truman Show from 1998 has one specific scene that would make for an amazing LEGO diorama – the moment when Truman escapes the show, walking on the simulated sky to reach the exit.

Lego.Ozzy.Fan‘s diorama depiction of this scene is perfect for a smaller LEGO Ideas model, cleverly recreating the moment in a build that would be suitable on a desk or wall. It wouldn’t be surprising to see The Truman Show on the list of finalists tomorrow.

These are just a handful of the submissions and franchises that may be one of the five finalists tomorrow and you can head here to check out all the builds in this challenge.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.

Much as I want a LEGO Stargate set, it won’t happen as BlueBrixx has the Stargate licence.
