Five LEGO Blacktron sets we’d like to be remade in rumoured model
Rumours of a new LEGO Blacktron remake set similar to 10497 Galaxy Explorer have us wondering what might be next for this retro collection.
After 10497 Galaxy Explorer, 40580 Blacktron Cruiser and 40712 Micro Rocket Launchpad, LEGO Icons is rumoured to be getting another remake model next year under 10355 for $109.99 and with 1,151 pieces. It’s believed that this will be another Blacktron model, similar to 40580 Blacktron Cruiser but with a much larger piece count.

While we wait for any announcement and take the rumour with caution, here are five Blacktron sets that we’d like to be remade, whether it’s through the rumoured January 2025 set or eventually.
We’re including the Blacktron 2 sets in this list too, though their different colour scheme makes them somewhat less likely for a remake over the more iconic sets.
5 – 6954 Renegade

1987’s 6954 Renegade was proposed by one of the sources of the rumour to be a good contender for the reported Blacktron remake and it’s hard to deny the potential of this unique build. Its shape is unlike most other LEGO spaceships of that era with standout features including the yellow rockets, the transparent red detailing and the cockpit at the end of an extended beam.
A remake of this set with a piece count similar to 10497 Galaxy Explorer could expand on the size of the set adding hallways and more interior spaces while retaining the overall shape of the ship. Similar to the official LEGO Icons model, the rover would likely still be included too.
4 – 6988 Alpha Centauri Outpost

6998 Alpha Centauri Outpost from 1991 is an especially good contender for a larger LEGO Blacktron remake as base builds in the Classic Space remake LEGO Icons sets haven’t been common, only depicted in 40712 Micro Rocket Launchpad.
This particular base has a design that heavily evokes the classic era and a landing pad to the side for a smaller spaceship. Something similar to 10320 Eldorado Fortress would work well and a smaller price point of $109.99 might still work as the base isn’t too dense despite its volume.
3 – 6933 Spectral Starguider

Classic Space is full of larger wheeled vehicles too and this has similarly only been covered in 40712 Micro Rocket Launchpad.
6933 Spectral Starguide with its larger moulded wheels and bright green cockpit elements has a distinct design that we’d like to see adapted with modern elements one day.
2 – 6987 Message Intercept Base

Back to bases, 6987 Message Intercept Base isn’t too dense with parts but has a huge footprint and despite its many larger pieces that have been retired, that only makes the potential of a remake set for it more interesting.
The only potential problem with this prediction is that the models’ many baseplates might be less enticing for the LEGO Group and switching to brick-built plates made of smaller elements might take up much of the budget to cover a similar footprint to 6987 Message Intercept Base.
1 – 6981 Aerial Intruder

1991’s 6981 Aerial Intruder is a safer bet for a Blacktron remake and its singular larger windshield element would be an interesting challenge to recreate with modern elements.
Compared to bases and wheeled vehicles, spaceships more commonly receive LEGO Icons sets and would provide less of a challenge for the designers than having to adapt the older baseplates and wheels.

For $110.000, and their recent release of the previous Blacktron set, the best course if action would be to avoid Blacktron II. So, as we know printed baseplates are no longer a thing, neither is the moon baseplate, I’m hoping for the Renegade or the Battrax. I definitely do not want anything with hard plastic tires getting rehashed, even seeing the Battrax possibly get a modernized treatment would be extraordinary. If TLG wants to modernize the moon baseplate,I am all for a Blacktron base.
With trans neon orange discontinued, and Luke’s lightsaber now being trans bright green, to release any Blacktron II sets without trans neon green would be ridiculous.
