Five new LEGO sets you may have overlooked in August 2023

With more than 60 new LEGO sets to comb through in August, it’s difficult to keep track of everything – so here are five hidden gems you might have overlooked this month.

August is another bumper month for new LEGO sets, and while there are plenty of products making headlines left and right, there are others that risk going under the radar. If you want to make sure you’re across absolutely everything before placing your orders at LEGO.com, best not to overlook these five sets…

5 – 60397 Monster Truck Race

Theme: LEGO City Price: £46.99 / $49.99 / €52.99 Pieces: 806 Link: Buy now

LEGO City’s time to shine in the UK and Europe was June 1, when 14 surprisingly fresh sets arrived on shelves. Those same models have just debuted in the US (at long last), and those two facts combined ensure that the three completely-new-for-August sets risk being forgotten about entirely. But these three models – each hooked to LEGO 2K Drive – deserve your attention, and not least 60397 Monster Truck Race for its prominent LEGO Stunt Rally vibes. Remember LEGO Stunt Rally? Anyone? Just us, maybe.

4 – 31144 Exotic Pink Parrot

Theme: LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Price: £46.99 / $49.99 / €52.99 Pieces: 806 Link: Buy now

“But Brick Fanatics,” you say, “I’ve already got a LEGO parrot. Why do I need another?” Because this one’s pink, is why. 31144 Exotic Pink Parrot paints 31136 Exotic Parrot in even more vivid hues, and becomes one of the first results of the LEGO Group’s pilot program for recoloured sets in 2021. Whether you already have the blue version or not, though, you shouldn’t pass up the chance to build this excellent Creator 3-in-1 set.

3 – 76250 Wolverine’s Adamantium Claws

Theme: LEGO Marvel Price: £46.99 / $49.99 / €52.99 Pieces: 806 Link: Buy now

Revealed to relatively little fanfare in July, 76250 Wolverine’s Adamantium Claws joins a growing collection of LEGO Marvel gloves, which is not a phrase we ever thought we’d be using. It might not immediately jump out next to this month’s headline LEGO Marvel sets – 76261 Spider-Man Final Battle, 76266 Endgame Final Battle – but it’s still worth a look, if only for being a rare example of a LEGO X-Men set.

2 – 75361 Spider Tank

Theme: LEGO Star Wars Price: £46.99 / $49.99 / €52.99 Pieces: 806 Link: Buy now

There’s a good reason you might have overlooked this set: it was revealed ages ago, and is based on a specific part of a specific episode of The Mandalorian Season 3, which already feels like old news. But ignore 75361 Spider Tank at your own peril, because it includes not only the best Bo-Katan Kryze minifigure to date, but also the new-for-2023 Darksaber element and a surprisingly articulated build.

1 – 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica

Theme: LEGO Technic Price: £46.99 / $49.99 / €52.99 Pieces: 806 Link: Buy now

The LEGO Group has leaned into the concept of providing sets on similar subjects across a range of price points in recent years, effectively giving everybody the chance to own a LEGO Bugatti, X-wing or castle regardless of their budget. The same is now true of a lime green Lamborghini, as 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica offers a more affordable Italian supercar than 42115 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37. Next to this month’s Technic titan 42146 Liebherr Crawler Crane LR 13000, though, it’s easily overlooked.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
