Have the newly announced LEGO Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy sets met expectations?

The three new LEGO sets announced for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy seem to meet many of our key expectations while leaving space for later sets based on the upcoming film.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, due for release on May 5, follows on from the plot as part of Phase Five of the MCU, and while we’re still seeing the familiar team there are also a few new characters that are getting introduced.

So far, the LEGO Group has put out 14 sets from the franchise, including newly announced 76251 Star-Lord’s Helmet and 76193 The Guardians’ Ship. And from what we’ve seen from the newest sets so far, they’re definitely matching up to what we and many other fans were hoping to see.

5 – A new Guardians’ ship

The new Guardians’ Ship, as seen in the trailer, is a total redesign from its predecessor, and was first seen in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. The new design from the film seems ideally suited to a new LEGO set, with two small detachable spaceships that actually makes the set more of a three-in-one.

4 – New uniforms

With 76255 The New Guardians’ Ship we also get five new minifigures, and while the original LEGO Guardians’ Ship came with six, this time we also get all of them (barring new character Adam Warlock) in the new Guardian uniforms.

These are a callback to the blue and red uniforms from the 2008 versions of the Guardians from the comics, and seem to represent the team in their official capacity as defenders of the galaxy coming together in this final instalment.

3 – The High Evolutionary

While we’re definitely getting introduced to some new characters, so far we don’t have any indication that there will be more about the High Evolutionary in LEGO form. However, this isn’t necessarily a drawback, as after the film’s release in May the character will be properly introduced to fans, leaving space for future Guardians of the Galaxy sets with more scenes and references from the film.

2 – Adam Warlock

Along with 76255 The New Guardians’ Ship, we’re getting our first look at Adam Warlock in shiny gold minifigure form. In comics history, he was first seen in the Fantastic Four, and is being played by Will Poulter in the final film. Although we’ve been told that Adam Warlock is not exactly another hero, we’ll have to wait for the film to be released to find out more about what his character has to offer.

1 – Knowhere

For now, it looks like we aren’t getting a further look at Knowhere to have alongside 76020 Knowhere Escape Mission. While this is a little disappointing, we do know that not all of the main locations from the Guardians of the Galaxy sets have been covered in LEGO form yet, and after the final film is out we can only hope that there’s going to be some more expansion, particularly with a versatile setting that is definitely well suited to being recreated with LEGO.
