How useful is LEGO Ideas 21348 Dungeons & Dragons for D&D?

LEGO Ideas 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale is sized for minifigures, meaning it should work well with official D&D miniatures too.

There’s no doubt that LEGO Ideas 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale is intended to be used with either the official minifigures or any other minifigures that you have on hand. Since the set has a tie-in adventure, you can use the model as a representation of the world for its battles and its figures and minifigures match with the adventure too.

Thankfully for those aiming to use this model outside the official adventure for both display and play or within your custom campaigns, D&D has a line of miniature figures that scale surprisingly decent with the LEGO Ideas set. Digging into our collection of official miniatures, we’ve explored the possibility of using 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale in display and play, using both minifigures and miniatures.

While the set is scaled best for minifigures, the builds are relatively close to being scaled with standard minifigures. Admittedly, more abstract areas including the meadow and dungeon work better than the tavern thanks in no small part to its door, standing much taller than it should for miniatures compared to minifigures.

Beyond the Red Dragon’s Tale adventure, the variety of locations within 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale lend themselves well to a mix of common D&D locales though – from a tavern to a dungeon. The amount of space available isn’t overly extensive, positioning this model better as a display piece rather than a more functional battle map. Given how expensive and harder to find detailed D&D display-worthy battle maps are though, the LEGO set is certainly worth keeping in mind.

Despite the amount of space available, The size of miniatures compared to minifigures works to their favour in the dungeon areas of 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale as there’s much more space for them and they’re generally easier to reach and move around too thanks to the base included with each.

While 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale is designed for minifigures, we’ve been surprised at just how well everything (apart from the outside of the tavern) is scaled for official D&D miniatures too. The set proves to be diverse enough for both types of fantasy figures and in some aspects, the miniatures work better than minifigures.

The set’s compatibility outside of the official adventure is going to require some imagination as the areas are specific but still generic enough to represent any standard meadow, dungeon or tavern. Still, it’s better positioned to be a display piece when not playing the official LEGO adventure – whether you want to display your D&D minifigures or miniatures.

LEGO Ideas 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale will be available for LEGO Insiders from April 1 and launch widely on April 4. Those who purchase the £314.99 / $359.99 / €359.99 set before April 7 will also score a free Mimic Dice Box gift-with-purchase while stocks last.
