What if the rumoured LEGO F1 Series 2 isn't just cars?

Rumour has it that a second LEGO Minifigures F1 series is on the way, but what if it's not just 12 miniature cars next year?

The latest LEGO rumour to race to the scene is word of 71055 F1 Series 2 in April or May of next year. The numbering puts it as part of the LEGO Minifigures line, and its name suggests some kind of follow-up to 71049 F1 Collectible Race Cars. That series from 2025 consisted of a dozen miniature Formula 1 cars based on the 12 teams in the motorsport at the time of writing.

The only minifigure elements within these cars are a head and a helmet. They are otherwise identical builds with different colours and prints. A second series of these cars would be an opportunity for some changes or upgrades. The below is only speculation, and nothing for the rumoured 71055 F1 Series 2 has been confirmed or stated by reliable sources.

That includes updated liveries for the 2027 season of the motorsport, the new teams to replace those that have since left, and minifigure faces underneath the helmets. On that latter point, while many were pleased with the series of 12 cars, some comments from the initial reveal felt that the series was lacking real drivers.

Two minifigure heads printed with that team's drivers in each car would be one solution to this, though the discussions and fees that would be required for this are likely to be an obstacle to overcome. Since the start of the LEGO Group's Formula 1 partnership, a series of four helmets has started depicting these real drivers as minifigures.

It's a step in the right direction for many, and these would be a great addition (or replacement) to the miniature cars in a LEGO Formula 1 series. That said, the presence of these helmets with minifigures in them is just another reason for the LEGO Group to continue to keep the real driver minifigures specific to the helmets. A solution might have been to depict them in racing or casual outfits, but the helmets cover both styles already.

Actual minifigures would align better with the norm for the various LEGO Minifigures series, but buildable blind-boxed items have long since been a part of the LEGO portfolio through Super Mario. In fact, there's another range launching next month.

LEGO Technic 42233 Mighty Machines 1

42233 Mighty Machines consists of eight small Technic models similar to 71049 F1 Collectible Race Cars, proving that the LEGO Group is still interested in pursuing blind-boxed builds. We'd note, though, that 42233 Mighty Machines is part of LEGO Technic, not minifigures, and is not taking up the third annual slot for a series as 71049 F1 Collectible Race Cars did in 2025. A Shrek series has already been confirmed for September.

Whether the rumoured 71055 F1 Series 2 will follow in these footsteps or move to traditional minifigures will be interesting to watch, provided the rumours are accurate. The current rumoured name does not clarify one way or the other, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see driver minifigures remain exclusive to the helmets.
