LEGO Star Wars 75355 X-wing Starfighter is drawing criticism from fans

The recently revealed UCS LEGO X-wing is already receiving a large amount of criticism online, with many fans calling the set ‘disproportionate’.

The LEGO Group has revealed this year’s May the 4th Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series set, 75355 X-wing Starfighter. This is the third UCS X-wing, with the last being released 10 years ago. The standards for detail and displayability in LEGO sets have only continued to go up in the years since 2013, which is what’s making some fans so disappointed in this newest addition to the UCS collection.

On r/lego, one of the top comments on the post announcing the set is from u/TerranCmdr, who says, “I can’t be the only one bothered by the proportions of this set. The wings open too wide and the nose is too fat. The wings also seem a bit short. Honestly I like the previous UCS set better.” This is a sentiment echoed by many other commenters on the subreddit. “[This] is much worse than the old one,” writes u/astronautsaurus, and u/zosorose adds, “Pretty disappointed in this after the incredible standard UCS sets are now. The proportions are really bad [in my opinion].“

Over on Twitter, the feedback is a little more broad – user Eqan_125 simply writes, “ew.” This sort of reaction isn’t anything new. LEGO fans aren’t known for their undying support and refusal to complain, that’s for sure. But it’s interesting that the criticisms are mostly pointed at the same two things (that are usually not the source of outspoken fan complaints): incorrect proportions and inferiority to a previous version.

The fact that the set has only just been revealed in a series of images and videos carefully curated by the LEGO Group – no one has their hands on the set yet – and the criticisms are already so consistent is not necessarily a good sign. There’s a chance the set looks better in person, but the LEGO Group’s marketing team always tries to find the very best angles and images to make a set as appealing as possible in initial reveals. Certain things just can’t be avoided; the engines are much bigger than the previous versions, and the nose’s shape is quite different.

Whether the negative response to this set will carry through to its actual release is yet to be seen. Will 75355 X-wing Starfighter be the next 76210 Hulkbuster? Only time will tell.
