LEGO Star Wars 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer visual tour and gallery

Stride through the microscale hallways of 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer in our visual guide to the newly-revealed LEGO Star Wars display set.

Unveiled completely by surprise at LEGO.com on March 1, 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer revisits a concept first tested in 77904 Nebulon-B Frigate. But where that 2020 set was produced exclusively for San Diego Comic-Con, then sold only in the US following the event’s pandemic-prompted postponement, Darth Vader’s capital ship will be available to the masses from May 1.

From the build process to its brand new pieces, here’s everything you need to know about 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer ahead of its release, all in one handy visual guide.

LEGO Star Wars 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer build

75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer is built in microscale, which allows it to come in at a much cheaper price than 2011’s 10221 Super Star Destroyer (the last rendition of this ship). That set was also microscale, of course, because a minifigure-scale Executor would probably retail for the GDP of a small country. But this is an even smaller microscale set, pitched just right to still be recognisable (and pack in plenty of greebling).

Expect lots of small pieces among its 630 bricks, and some potentially quite intricate assembly. We can’t tell from the official images alone, but the distinctive sloping hull of the capital ship has likely been captured using simple hinge elements, while the adorably tiny Star Destroyers make inventive use of the relatively new sharper wedge plates.

LEGO Star Wars 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer format

If 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer’s format seems familiar, it’s because (as mentioned up top) the LEGO Group has already tried it once before in 77904 Nebulon-B Frigate. That comparatively simple model also includes a microscale capital ship on a black display base, with a plaque marking the 40th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back.

Unfortunately, it’s pretty expensive to pick up on the aftermarket, so you’re going to have a hard time completing a collection of sets in this style. The good news is that 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer opens the door for an entire series of affordable, displayable and microscale LEGO Star Wars ships – and the possibilities really are endless.

LEGO Star Wars 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer comparison

The burning question with any LEGO Star Wars set, of course, is: how well does it capture the source material? Bearing in mind the huge difference in scale, and that LEGO sets are not one-to-one replicas but artistic interpretations created through a particular medium, 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer holds up pretty well in our eyes.

From the way the hull tapers at the rear end to the distinctive sloped shape shared across all Star Destroyers, the LEGO Star Wars team looks to have done a decent job of recreating the Executor within 630 pieces.

LEGO Star Wars 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer details

At this scale, including the blue highlights across the top of the on-screen ship wouldn’t really have been feasible, but you can see a couple of trans-light blue elements along either side of the LEGO set. That’s just one example of the detail the LEGO designers have crammed into a relatively small footprint, but of course the majority of the details come in the set’s greebles.

For the uninitiated, greebling in the LEGO-sphere refers to adding tiny pieces (often completely randomly) to the surface of a model for visual interest. That was a defining feature of 10221 Super Star Destroyer, and the same is true of 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer, which incorporates cheese slopes, ingots, grille plates, clips and bars across the exterior.

LEGO Star Wars 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer new pieces

As is often the case for the LEGO Star Wars theme – which typically reserves its element budget for new minifigures – 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer doesn’t immediately look to include any brand new bricks. But there’s at least one new print for the Executor plaque on its display stand, matching the aesthetic of the LEGO Star Wars Helmet Collection.

We’re hoping that the Return of the Jedi 40th anniversary piece next to it is also printed, but the proximity of the decoration to the edge of the brick suggests it could be a sticker. That would be a pretty disappointing outcome, though – especially given the price of the set…

75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer launches on May 1 for £59.99 / $69.99 / €69.99. It’s available to pre-order from LEGO.com right now, which will get you some of the way to the current gift-with-purchase, 40586 Moving Truck. That LEGO Icons set is available with all orders above £160 / $180 / €180 until March 3.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
