This piece of LEGO antiquity takes Ideas back 2,000 years

A grand recreation of the Pantheon as it stood almost 2,000 years ago has racked up 10,000 votes on LEGO Ideas, and if it gets the green light will surely be the theme’s biggest set to date.

Coming in at a staggering 4,983 pieces – making almost full use of the platform’s increased part count as of September last year – CUBETTARO’s Pantheon 124 AD captures both the interior and exterior of the ancient building, hoping to appeal to a cross-section of LEGO fans, architecture enthusiasts and history buffs in the process.

“As an architect, restorer, and history enthusiast, my goal was to ‘faithfully’ recreate how this structure might have appeared in Roman times, when it served as a temple dedicated to the 12 Olympian deities,” CUBETTARO, real name Giorgio, explains on the project page. “This project was a real challenge for me, especially when it came to selecting the right scale.”

The model as pitched stands a whopping 74cm long, 30cm wide and 37cm tall, and includes seven minifigures of various Greek gods and emperors, among which are Ares, Artemis and Poseidon. Giorgio also notes that the build is designed in such a way that two copies can be combined into a fully-enclosed Pantheon – though if it does make it to production, that’s going to be a costly exercise.

At the moment, the biggest LEGO Ideas set of all time is this year’s 21356 River Steamboat, running up to 4,090 pieces all in all. This ancient Pantheon would blow past that in its current form – but getting the chance to build it for ourselves hinges on the LEGO Ideas review board, which must now decide whether or not to give it the green light to become an official LEGO set as part of the second 2025 review. Check out all the projects in the running in this round below.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
