The LEGO Group breaks ground on another major construction project

Work has started on a new expansion to the LEGO Group’s Billund headquarters, which should bring together almost 2,000 employees in a single location.

The LEGO Group is no stranger to ambitious construction projects, with ground recently broken on a new factory in Vietnam. Now, however, it’s starting work on a project a little closer to home – something we reported on earlier this year.

According to a new press release, the company has today broken ground on a new campus in Billund for its employees to use. Reportedly, almost 6,000 people are employed by the LEGO Group in Billund at the moment – with that number reflecting a sharp increase in employee numbers over the last few years. The new campus will (as previously announced) accommodate 1,900 engineering, quality and production employees, who are currently spread across seven different locations.

The new campus will offer a variety of different facilities for these employees to use, including offices, laboratories, test facilities, tool shops and moulding areas. With a footprint of 46,000 square metres it will, when combined with the existing Kornmarken factory, produce a campus covering 100,000 square metres instead.

However, it’s not all work and no play. Apparently the campus will also offer a ‘Sustainability Experience’ and a playroom for people to learn about sustainability efforts. There will even be a public park for Billund’s residents (and the LEGO Group’s employees) to enjoy. That idea of sustainability will supposedly extend to the construction process, with low carbon footprint materials and energy efficiency considered at this early stage.

It’ll be a while until we can see this building in the flesh, as it’s due to be inaugurated in 2025. But it appears that LEGO employees have something to look forward to in the years ahead – and in the meantime, they can enjoy the LEGO campus model they received a few months back.
