The new 4000048 Bugatti Type 35 features not only exclusive wheel elements, but also a LEGO Star Wars recolour that’s almost painful to see locked behind an inaccessible set.
The LEGO Group handed out the Icons-style car – which is limited to 250 copies in total – at a recent LEGO House event hosted in conjunction with Bugatti Club Denmark. And if you’re hoping to put it together from your own collection, you are flat out of luck: not only for those unique wheels, which may be 3D-printed, but also for the exclusive recoloured piece used for the hood ornament.
Look closely at the box art and you’ll recognise the piece in question as the ringed lightsaber hilt used by Star Wars Inquisitors. This element has popped up in five LEGO Star Wars sets to date and is colour-locked to pearl dark grey – but in 4000048 Bugatti Type 35 it appears in what looks like metallic silver, or may even be drum-lacquered silver.
Regular LEGO lightsaber hilts come in metallic silver as standard these days, so a corresponding version of the ringed Inquisitor hilt would be more appropriate for a playset. The coating on a drum-lacquered version would wear off pretty quickly during intense play sessions when held by a minifigure.
And while neither of those colours would be appropriate for the Inquisitors necessarily, it would be great to see that piece more widely available if only for LEGO Star Wars customs. It’s at least a fine example of clever parts usage for the Bugatti, although again it’s also a blocker if you’re looking to assemble your own version of the car, perhaps with alternative wheels from (for instance) 11376 Ford Model T.
If nothing else – and why not dream big while we’re at it? – the almost entirely positive reception to 4000048 Bugatti Type 35, combined with the negative reaction to its exclusivity, will hopefully inspire the LEGO Group to tackle a race car from this era in the wider Icons line. We’ve already gone as far back as it’s possible to go with the Model T, so it doesn’t feel too far-fetched.
