LEGO celebrates three years of zero waste to landfill

The LEGO Group is celebrating three years of zero waste to landfill, revealing just how much waste was reduced in its factories throughout 2024.

Ongoing efforts in sustainability from the LEGO Group have now reached a landmark three years of zero waste to landfill, meaning that less than one percent of waste generated goes to landfill throughout the worldwide operations. This is confirmed to include a minor increase, and in 2024, 96% of the waste generated during the production of LEGO pieces was reused, recycled or recovered.

The LEGO Group has also confirmed that since 2022, the annual amount of waste going to incineration, without energy recovery, has decreased. The press release goes on to detail the waste reduction efforts at some of the LEGO Group’s factories worldwide.

In Denmark, China and Mexico, waste was reduced by more than 160 tons in 2024 by implementing digital solutions. Employees in Czechia also found ways to close a loop for the cardboard cores that packaging materials are delivered in, helping reduce waste by 39 tons. The solution was to return the cores to the supplier, instead of treating them as waste and recycling them.

LEGO factories worldwide are similarly confirmed to re-use element waste to make new LEGO pieces, and where that’s not possible, the waste is recycled into other industries, including car manufacturing and electronic devices.

The LEGO Group’s other efforts towards sustainability include solar farms at factories, including that of the Czech Republic, where an expansion more than doubled its renewable energy capacity.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.

I just want to say that I have in the past worked for companies that have a “zero waste to landfill” policy on paper. But in reality this basically means that they hand all their waste to another company, who then dump said waste to landfill. So on paper everything looks clean but in reality A LOT of waste goes straight to landfill!
