LEGO CEO says paper bags roll-out is ‘on track’, offers more concrete timeline

The LEGO Group's CEO says the roll-out of the company's new paper bags is still ‘on track’, and has offered a more concrete timeline of when we can expect to see them in different regions.

First announced all the way back in 2020, the LEGO Group’s paper bags – which are due to replace the plastic bags that house bricks – are still not widespread in sets three years later. To date, the only product to contain entirely paper bags is 2021’s employee gift 4002021 The Temple of Celebrations, though the new material has at least started to show up for specific elements (such as the printed windscreen in September’s 10318 Concorde).

Initial plans to phase in the paper bags from early 2022 are seemingly still ongoing, then – but the LEGO Group says it’s still pleased with the progress it’s made as part of its overall goal to make its packaging sustainable by 2025, a target that it’s still confident it can hit.

“We’re on track,” LEGO Group CEO Niels B. Christiansen confirms to Brick Fanatics. “We are literally, as we speak, changing a lot of production machines throughout all our factories to make this happen. So it's not an easy task, but it's now in execution. We know what to do, we are investing behind it and you will already now start to see some paper bags in Europe.

“That will go on and roll out through this year and we will move into Asia Pacific in the year after and then by 2025 it will roll out in the US. So it's on track to happen along the timeline we've given.”

Some packaging changes have already been widely implemented, including paper bags replacing foil bags on official LEGO magazines, while September will see the Collectible Minifigures switch to cardboard boxes with 71039 Marvel Series 2. But there are still some situations that require new solutions, such as the glut of polybags released every year.

The company’s continued sustainability efforts will now come hand-in-hand with its drive towards net-zero by 2050, a pledge announced yesterday alongside the LEGO Group’s financial results for the first half of 2023.
