LEGO City is delving deeper into science fiction in 2024

LEGO City’s selection of space sets has grown more outlandish, but still realistic in recent years though that might be about to change dramatically.

While the fictional metropolis of LEGO City and the areas beyond it are just that, fiction, there’s always been an element of realism and relatability within its sets, at least for the most part.

However, listings for 2024 models indicate that the denizens of LEGO City’s space exploration team will encounter aliens in 60431 Space Rover with Aliens. It’s one of several models listed on the price comparison site brickmerge.de that could be coming in 2024.

It’s not like aliens are a complete unknown in LEGO City, 60230 People Pack – Space Research and Development, 60313 Space Ride Amusement Truck and 60361 Ultimate Stunt Riders Challenge have all referenced extraterrestrials but only as props, not living things.

LEGO City’s space subtheme has been more adventurous in recent years too, with a lunar base complete with glass domes, space stations and even minifigures preparing to explore Mars.

All of this is realistic, relative to the current state of the space exploration industry in real life or concepts for how it might be in the future. However, aliens are sufficiently less realistic at the time of writing

There’s nothing to say that aliens don’t exist but in the real world, we’ve yet to come across them – as far as we know – especially while riding a rover on the surface of another astronomical object.

60431 Space Rover with Aliens is listed alongside 60428 Space Mech, 60429 Space Asteroid Recovery, 60430 Spaceship, 60433 Modular Space Station and 60434 Space Base with Launch Pad. The first two models would be unusual additions to LEGO City’s space subtheme too, though not quite as outlandish as aliens.

It makes for an exciting potential evolution for LEGO City, much like LEGO Technic will reportedly go through in 2024. However, the listings have yet to be officially confirmed so take them with some caution until the new year or more information arrives.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
