LEGO Classic BIONICLE Tahu concept drawing revealed

Concept art for the LEGO Classic Tahu BIONICLE build has been revealed, showcasing the initial drawing behind the simplistic depiction.

Despite the undoubtedly simple and accessible build that makes up the Tahu figure in 11021 90 Years of Play, this BIONICLE reference has a concept drawing, offering a look at what the character looks like with the block-based proportions.

For the LEGO Group’s 90th anniversary in 2022, a variety of LEGO sets were released to celebrate classic themes. 11021 90 Years is one such set, part of LEGO Classic, and includes pieces to make miniature versions of past models from over the decades.

This includes the first Tahu figure from BIONICLE. However, since the LEGO Group’s days of utilising the constraction system of pieces are mostly over, the figure needed to be recreated entirely using System LEGO bricks. The result is the BIONICLE set we didn’t know we needed

Over on Twitter, designer George Gilliatt has revealed the concept drawing for this now-iconic figure, fitting the details of Tahu’s original figure into the proportions and piece shapes of Classic Tahu.

It’s interesting to see how much attention Classic Tahu had during development as the simplistic design might not have required a concept drawing this detailed, but it still has one with a much more serious appearance compared to the version from 11021 90 Years of Play

11021 90 Years of Play is still available on the official online store for £44.99 / $49.99 / €49.99. The legacy of BIONICLE has continued in 2023 with a video game reference and a new fan in 41755 Nova’s Room. 10497 Galaxy Explorer for the 90th anniversary also referenced the theme
