LEGO celebrates International Women’s Day 2022 with designer interviews

The LEGO Group is celebrating International Women’s Day by sharing stories from designers to explain how gender bias affects the world of design.

As part of the LEGO Group’s International Women’s Day events, the Rebuild the World marketing campaign has added a section for the annual celebration with a video to share comments and thoughts on gender bias in the industry from LEGO designers.

“During my education, it was mainly a male-dominated one because engineering was a big part of it,” explained Element Designer Esmee Kuenen. “That’s definitely brought along a lot of stereotypes.”

“I think a way that the design industry could be more inclusive could be more gender-inclusive is to be aware of our design biases to create products that everyone can enjoy, no matter what gender, what ethnicity.” shared senior Graphic Designer Crystal M. Fontan, tying into concerns of gender bias in LEGO Friends after a promise from the LEGO Group to remove such bias from products and marketing.

“If we would have more women working in toy design, toys would be more inclusive because the designers themselves are more inclusive.” commented Esmee Kuenen.

Also available in time for International Women’s Day on March 8, 2022, is the free 40530 Jane Goodall Tribute gift-with-purchase available now on the official online store and the same activity that allows you to insert yourself into a LEGO advert.
