LEGO Disney 100 43230 A Homage to Walt Disney is packed with movie moments

There are all kinds of magical movie moments to unpack in the upcoming LEGO Disney 100 43230 A Homage to Walt Disney.

The LEGO Group today revealed that yet another Disney 100 set will be arriving this year to celebrate the House of Mouse’s centennial in style. The difference this time around is that the forthcoming build honours the man who started it all, with 43230 A Homage to Walt Disney launching on September 1.

Retailing for €99.99 in Europe, the 811-piece model features a vintage camera with film reel, a clapperboard minifigure display stand, minifigures of Walt Disney, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, plus unique Bambi and Dumbo figures. Thanks to a clever bit of LEGO engineering, the two film reels on top of the camera combine with a single digit to read the number ‘100.’

Not only is 43230 A Homage to Walt Disney clearly a love letter to the company’s beloved creator, but the LEGO Disney set also shines a spotlight on 10 decades of magical movie moments. Contained within the upcoming build are numerous references to the studio’s rich animation past, many of which you may miss at first glance.

For starters (and for some reason), the main build includes an old style film camera and not a multiplane camera, with the latter being the style of photographic set-up used in Disney’s early days to create 2D animation. The camera would have been pointed straight down at the original film cells, shooting one or two frames per second, which would then simulate movement when projected back at full speed.

The second most notable inclusion in 43230 A Homage to Walt Disney is the unique strip of cellulose included in the set, one that features images of many classic Disney animated masterpieces. From what we can see so far, we’ve spotted the likes of The Jungle Book, The Sword in the Stone, Sleeping Beauty, Mulan, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and many others.

Considering the transparent nature of the cellulose strip in 43230 A Homage to Walt Disney, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a light brick to be included in the set. While that’s pure speculation on our part at this stage, the inclusion of the element would allow for the same functionality as seen in the current 40600 Disney 100 Years Celebration GWP, allowing for the film strip images to be projected.

The minifigure selection in 43230 A Homage to Walt Disney is also worthy of note, as it represents various important eras in the studio’s history. We actually suggested a potential Walt Disney minifigure a while back, and he’s included here doodling a picture of Mickey Mouse, who first appeared in animated form in Steamboat Willie in 1928.

Bambi’s inclusion also makes sense as (at the time) it was the highest-grossing movie of all-time, after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, with Dumbo being one of only a few Disney films to utilise watercolour backgrounds. Combined together, all of the elements mentioned above come together to make this upcoming LEGO Disney set a potentially unique time capsule of a true cinematic giant.

43230 A Homage to Walt Disney will be released on September 1, with full pricing and details of the 811-piece set to be officially confirmed.
