The LEGO football minifigures we need this World Cup

As the LEGO Group struggles to fully connect with the football audience this World Cup, there is at least one solution to proper football minifigures.

The LEGO Group’s recent venture back into LEGO football territory has so far yielded mixed results, in part through not really fully committing to the creative opportunities that are otherwise open to it.

While in respective licensing partnerships with the likes of Adidas, Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid, the company has looked to match a big year for football between the UEFA European Women’s Championship and Men’s World Cup with the one set – LEGO Ideas 21337 Table Football.

This is a set that offers potential, presenting a table-friendly version of the game, complete with two full teams of LEGO minifigure footballers. Except the design of those minifigures leaves a lot to the imagination, and likewise leaves us frustrated at what might have been.

The follow-up of a female referee to come in January’s Collectible Minifigures 71037 Series 24 promises hope of more to come, but currently sits mismatched with 21337 (and only further highlights the shortcomings in design of that set’s minifigures).

So while the LEGO Group rather clumsily takes its time creating something that really speaks to football fans (and it’ll certainly get there), FireStar Toys is offering an excellent taste of exactly what we are after right now (and we’ve organised an exclusive discount too).

With the Men’s World Cup going on, FireStar Toys has released some more minifigure football torso designs, this time of the Argentina, Brazil and USA home shirts for the tournament, and they are just simply perfect. While there will be licensing issues that restrict the LEGO Group from just releasing football team after football team, the simplicity and effectiveness of these torsos highlights just how effective and brilliant such minifigures could be.

FireStar Toys sells just the torsos based on the shirt designs, but with the option of adding name and numbers of your choice (with a character limit) on the front and back. Alongside all the little details cleverly worked into mimicking the official kits in brick style, this opportunity to add name and numbering offers a further level of authenticity, should you be so inclined to choose the official players or have you and your friends stepping out for a national team. Dream big.

We are putting our money where our mouth is here – we weren’t sent these for review, these were what we (me, writing this) were compelled to buy ASAP to start building our (my) LEGO minifigure footballer World Cup squads.

Where we are working with FireStar Toys, though, is in offering you a saving. The torsos are priced at £4.95 each and come with yellow hands as standard, but we have partnered with FireStar Toys to offer a 10% discount – use the code FSBRICKFANS at the checkout to activate that saving. It goes a long way when you are trying to build an entire World Cup squad.

This trio of LEGO national team football shirts follows on from last year’s selection the minifigure customisers produced to tie in with the delayed Men’s Euro 2020 tournament, which featured torso designs based on the home shirts for England, Italy, Scotland, Wales, Spain, Portugal, France and Germany. These are all still available and offer the same name and numbering option.

Also released alongside the Argentina, Brazil and USA shirts is a referee torso, and a charming World Cup tile that is perfectly to scale with minifigures. Who will win your LEGO World Cup?

Remember, we have partnered with FireStar Toys to offer a 10% discount on any purchases via their website, including these torsos. Use the code FSBRICKFANS at the checkout to activate the saving.
