LEGO Ideas launches contest to find the next Disney 100 set

LEGO Ideas has launched a new contest anchored around Disney’s 100th anniversary – and the winning entry will receive the honour of being turned into an official LEGO set.

Hosted in collaboration with Target – as per last year’s family-themed challenge – the new contest tasks fans with building what Disney means to them, through the lens of a brick-built scene, character or item. Each entry needs to be somewhere between 50 and 800 pieces, and the LEGO Ideas team has advised that including minifigures that require new moulds will hamper your chances of getting the green light.

The entry window is open until June 13 and 11am UK time. A team of judges from Target, the LEGO Group and Disney will then whittle all the submissions down into a shortlist for the fan vote, which will run from July 4 to 11. We’ll find out the overall winner no later than September 1.

As usual with LEGO Ideas contests, you can build either physically or digitally in BrickLink Studio, and the judges will be selecting finalists based on criteria including details, relevance, originality and the use of LEGO elements. All the fan vote finalists will receive copies of the newly-revealed 43226 Disney Duos and 43227 Villain Icons, while the overall winner will be compensated as per all LEGO Ideas fan designers.

That means they’ll receive 10 copies of their finished set, credit and a bio in the instructions, and 1% of the total net sales of the model. You can check out the full rules over on the contest page.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
