If you pride yourself on collecting every LEGO Star Wars set, then this recently announced LEGO Ideas set is a must-buy for your collection.
With the announcement of 21370 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, we have – technically – received our first ever LEGO Star Wars Ideas set.
For those not familiar with the connection, here’s the explanation. In Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, during the Galactic Senate debate scene, the camera pans across pods of senators from across the galaxy. In one of those pods sits a familiar, long-necked, wrinkly alien.

The beloved character E.T. is an Asogian from the planet Brodo Asogi, and his species is represented in the Senate by Senator Grebleips – ‘Spielberg’ spelled backwards.
Because E.T.’s species is a canonical part of the Republic, any LEGO representation of E.T. or his species could, by extension, be considered a Star Wars alien.
There’s also crossover recognition. In the 1982 film, E.T. recognises Yoda while trick-or-treating, stopping to say ‘home’ when he sees a child dressed as the Jedi Master. To some, this has been taken as playful evidence that E.T. exists within the wider Star Wars universe.
Now, some may argue that if it doesn’t carry the LEGO Star Wars logo on the box, it isn’t truly part of the range – but that’s not really how fandom works.
77013 Escape from the Lost Tomb includes a small Easter egg referencing C-3PO and R2-D2, just as in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and fans still collect it. Similarly, 43302 Main Street, U.S.A. is packed with Star Wars references, including a sticker of the classic movie poster.
If those sets count, then so should E.T.

21370 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a 1,226-piece set featuring a light brick, available from August 1. It is available for pre-order now from LEGO.com, priced at £119.99 / $139.99 / €129.99.
However, if you do plan on picking up this set to add to your LEGO Star Wars collection – or otherwise – consider waiting a couple of days for this key reason.
