LEGO Ideas Polaroid Camera’s biggest change is a heartwarming addition

You never know how different the final LEGO Ideas set will be from its original fan-made design but an upcoming set sticks close to the original inspiration – except for one addition.

Of course, this is helped by the fact that both the fan-made design and the final set are inspired by a real-life camera but even still, much of the upcoming LEGO Ideas set’s design and even interactive features have stayed true to  Minibrick Productions‘ original vision. As revealed in early images and details from Polish retailer Media Expert, 21345 Polaroid OneStep SX-70 Camera has just 22 pieces less than the original design, highlighting how similar the two are.

In terms of appearance, the camera itself is virtually identical. The rainbow stripe is slightly wider in the final design, but that’s the only real difference to note.

The features have also remained consistent between the two designs, with the photos illustrating the ability to flip open the front to ‘insert film’, twiddle the knob on the front, and even click the red button to ‘take a picture’. (It’s worth noting that it won’t actually take any photos.

Speaking of photos, this is where the key change comes into play. Minibrick Productions’ original design didn’t include any photos, only the Time-Zero Supercolor film that also made it into the final set. However, also designed by the LEGO Ideas team are three Polaroid photo-style elements that appear to be printed. These are very unique pieces not only in how they look but also in what they show.

The description on Media Expert’s listing states that the photos themselves are of Polaroid inventor Edwin H. Land, the LEGO House in Billund, and the sister of Minibrick Productions. This ties together the heritage and background of Polaroid, the LEGO Group, and the fan designer all at the same time, capturing the identity of all the major stakeholders that had input into 21345 Polaroid OneStep SX-70 Camera.

While changes to LEGO Ideas sets aren’t always popular, the additions here only add to an otherwise impressively faithful design. Considering the personal connection to both the fan designer and the companies behind 21345 Polaroid OneStep SX-70 Camera, we think this change will go down well.
