A moment from San Diego Comic-Con could open the door to the return of a fan-favourite character to LEGO sets – albeit in an updated form.
During their historic return to Hall H, Marvel Studios unveiled plans for a Ghost Rider movie, Black Panther III, and did a deep dive into Avengers: Doomsday. Following the panel, the LEGO Group revealed five sets based on the movie, all launching on October 4.
The first wave includes 40880 Avengers: Doomsday Heroes & Villain, 76345 Doctor Doom Bust, 76347 Avengers: Doomsday Quinjet, 76348 Epic Battle: Avengers: Doomsday, and 76352 Avengers: Doomsday New Avengers Tower.
However, as is often the case with Marvel releases, there is a chance the LEGO Group could produce additional sets containing spoilers once Avengers: Doomsday has been in cinemas for long enough, or even leaves theatres.
We saw a similar approach with 76261 Spider-Man Final Battle, which launched more than 18 months after Spider-Man: No Way Home premiered, allowing fans to discover that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield had returned as Spider-Man without spoiling the surprise in a set.
The same could happen with Avengers: Doomsday. While several characters who appeared at SDCC are missing from the initial LEGO sets – including Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi, and Kelsey Grammer’s Beast – one character who wasn’t on stage has sparked the biggest hopes of all.
Ryan Reynolds appeared during the panel wearing a grey (now confirmed to be denim) Deadpool costume to ask a question to Paul Rudd. During the appearance, he referenced Thor’s unanswered crying from Deadpool & Wolverine, teasing a potential involvement in the upcoming movie.
While IGN has reported that Reynolds will reprise his role as the Merc with a Mouth, other outlets have suggested that this may not be the case, leaving Deadpool’s involvement unconfirmed. The clip would seem to suggest Reynolds won't be returning, though you never truly know with Marvel.
If Deadpool does appear in Avengers: Doomsday, it could finally give LEGO fans the opportunity to see the character return in minifigure form for the first time since 6866 Wolverine’s Chopper Showdown in 2012.
The LEGO Group previously acknowledged that creating a dedicated Deadpool set would be challenging due to the R-rated nature of his solo movies. However, if the character appears in Avengers: Doomsday, it could provide the perfect opportunity for his comeback.
Hopefully, if Deadpool does return, he arrives in his iconic red suit and the ‘Jeanpool’ look was simply a one-off. Regardless of the colour, fans will likely snap up a new Deadpool minifigure the moment it appears.
Launching on October 4, 40880 Avengers: Doomsday Heroes & Villain, 76345 Doctor Doom Bust, 76347 Avengers: Doomsday Quinjet, and 76348 Epic Battle: Avengers: Doomsday are available to pre-order now, while 76352 Avengers: Doomsday New Avengers Tower will release on the same day.
