LEGO Marvel 76280 Spider-Man vs. Sandman: Final Battle is a great ‘add-on’ – but can it stand alone?

While LEGO Marvel 76280 Spider-Man vs. Sandman: Final Battle is clearly designed as a companion set, some fans are concerned about its ability to stand alone.

Recently revealed and on its way on January 1, 2024, 76280 Spider-Man vs. Sandman: Final Battle can stand alone on its black-plated base but is designed to match up with 76261 Spider-Man Final Battle. It adds the final two villains from the climactic battle from Spider-Man: No Way Home, including the very first Lizard minifigure and sits on top of the first LEGO Marvel set to create an ever larger build.

Indeed, it functions much like video game DLC content, adding more to an existing set through a separate purchase. Nonetheless, it can certainly work as a standalone set, as evidenced in an early review from MiniSuperHeroesToday. Having managed to get his hands on the set well ahead of its release, the LEGO YouTuber walks us through 76280 Spider-Man vs. Sandman: Final Battle in a new video.

“This set is pretty essential to have for the Spider-Man fans out there, especially if you have 76261 Spider-Man Final Battle,” MiniSuperHeroesToday commented. However, he wasn’t without his reservations in one area.

“It’s a pretty simple build,” the YouTuber admitted. “You can definitely see why people might be a little bummed to pay almost $40 for what’s here, but I do think if you already have 76261 Spider-Man Final Battle, this makes total sense. You get the final two villains and it is our first LEGO Lizard ever. Overall, it’s a really nice add-on for the set.”

Indeed, it’s a common concern from many LEGO Spider-Man fans that 76280 Spider-Man vs. Sandman: Final Battle has a hefty price tag for its 347 pieces. It’s worth noting, however, that other LEGO Marvel sets of a similar piece count have a similar price too, such as 76257 Wolverine Construction Figure with its 327 pieces and £31.99 / $32.99 / €37.99.

Perhaps the fact that 76280 Spider-Man vs. Sandman: Final Battle is designed to pair with another set makes it appear more like an add-on, rather than a self-sufficient build. In any case, the price per piece is respectable enough for a notoriously pricey licensed theme, particularly considering the fact it includes the very first minifigure Lizard ever.
