LEGO Microgames contest entries to become part of history

All 1,150 videogames submitted to LEGO Ideas Microgame Contest will be archived and preserved forever.

The LEGO Ideas Microgames Contest was the product of a partnership between Unity and the LEGO Group, where budding game developers were encouraged to use the Group’s System in Play and minifigures in the Unity Editor to create their own mini-videogames.

The winners were announced via a livestream back in April, but now everyone’s creations will be recognised. The Royal Danish Library has announced that all games submitted to the LEGO Ideas Contest will be officially archived in the National Library and become a part of Danish history.

“The primary purpose of receiving the games is for long-term preservation, and to ensure that the games will still exist and be available for study hundreds of years down the line,” says Games Archivist Allan Christophersen of the Royal Danish Library in a blog post from Unity. “We consider both LEGO and Unity to be important Danish companies with significant cultural impact.

“The combination of the two in the LEGO Ideas contest and the ensuing wave of creativity it inspired is a collection of cultural works that fit well within what would be considered ‘Danica,’ or Danish, and should be collected and preserved in the national archives.”

The LEGO Ideas contest games will be available to the public upon request in the Royal Danish Library’s Game Lab, found in The Black Diamond in Copenhagen. Once the games have been properly transformed and archived, they will be more easily accessible through the Royal Danish Library’s online search feature.

“For those who love building with LEGO bricks, physically or digitally, Unity’s LEGO Microgame provides the perfect place to start creating,” says Rasmus Harr, Senior Product Lead at LEGO Games. “We are so delighted to see that over a thousand videogame and LEGO fans have turned their creativity into exciting games in our contest.”
