LEGO Olivia Rodrigo reactions are in: bad idea, right?

Initial reactions to the newly-revealed LEGO Olivia Rodrigo sets are in, and they run the gamut from ‘hot shelf warmers’ to ‘obsessed’ and ‘this was made for me’.

The LEGO Group unveiled an entire wave of Olivia Rodrigo-themed sets under the Editions banner yesterday, developed in collaboration with the 23-year-old artist behind ‘SOUR’, ‘GUTS’ and ‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love’. These are something radically different for the LEGO Group, and are the first full wave of sets dedicated to a single artist.

So, how are they going down among the LEGO community? Maybe you can guess, but it’s still worth capturing a snapshot of the initial reactions here for posterity. And, further down, a response from the official LEGO Facebook page that pretty much sums up the entire conversation.

They say modern LEGO’s a cruel endeavour

As you can probably imagine, many of the criticisms of these LEGO Editions sets are fielded by people who’ve never heard of Olivia Rodrigo. Reddit threads, social media posts and the like are filled with entirely predictable comments ranging from ‘who?’ to ‘Olivia who?’

And, fair enough, not everyone can be expected to have heard of every musician. But in case anyone needs it pointing out, Olivia Rodrigo did just debut at the number one spot on the US Billboard 200 with her newly-released third album, which also enjoyed the biggest opening week of any solo artist in 2026. Those are big numbers.

So it’s still pretty disheartening to see some fans calling the range ‘embarrassing for LEGO’ and asking ‘who the hell wanted this?’ And is it even a LEGO set reveal if someone doesn’t assume these are taking attention away from retro themes like Castle, Space and – um, *checks notes* – Power Miners?

“These will sell well for the first week or two then be burning hot shelf warmers,” tron1974 said on reddit. “Too bad we can't get a whole line of castle, reboot of Space Police or Power Miners or something.”

Some responses are a little fairer and more measured, though. “Honestly surprised that out of all the female popstars we have, she's the first not to get one set, but five all at once,” East-Entertainment31 said. “I was expecting Taylor Swift or Beyonce to be the ones to receive a set first but maybe someday down the line.”

“I know who she is and that she’s very popular, but five sets is pretty surprising,” added FelixEvergreen. Indeed, the number of models in the range is unusual not only for a musician, but even for LEGO Editions – from a football perspective, Lionel Messi has maxed out at three sets, Ronaldo has two, and Mbappé and Viní Jr. have just one apiece.

There’s a real spread of personalities in the mix there, while the theme’s Formula 1 helmets also currently encompass four different drivers. By contrast, the theme’s musical sets focus entirely on one singer – although in so doing offer a variety of different sets at different price points. It feels like an assortment intended to reach a bunch of different budgets rather than to be collected in its entirety.

And to that I say…

We won’t finish that lyric here (look it up yourself if you’re unfamiliar), but suffice to say there are plenty of people for whom these LEGO Editions sets are very welcome. The comments on this behind-the-scenes Instagram video are full of Livies who say they’re so obsessed with these sets and can’t wait to pick them up.

When you consider the wider LEGO portfolio, though, it might not be that surprising.

“I’m actually thrilled,” kellyclarkdaughter said on reddit. “My 13-year-old niece loves Olivia Rodrigo and she feels like most Friends sets are too young and can’t always find other sets she’s interested in – but she loves to build. Let’s support LEGO appealing to this demographic that is notoriously challenging to appeal to.”

The LEGO Group is constantly trying to fill every possible niche in its target audience, and has its hooks in boys right the way from DUPLO through 4+ and System sets up to the 18+ range (once you’re in, you’re in for life).

But for girls there really is a noticeable gap – some themes appeal to all genders, but it’s fair to say that certain demographics are looking for particular things, and tapping into teenage girls with Olivia Rodrigo sets feels like a smart move.

Some fans are already pushing back against the negative reactions from people outside that demographic, too.

“The response to these sets is so exhausting,” Ilyyra commented on our latest YouTube video. “Young boys (and grown men too) are consistently catered specifically towards them by the LEGO Group, they get provided themes and any supplementary media that is catered specifically for them whilst often isolating their female demographic.

“As soon as LEGO makes something specifically targeted towards young girls, all these people want to do is complain about how it isn't catered for them.”
