LEGO responds to misleading 75371 Chewbacca lifestyle photo

The LEGO Group has responded to concerns around a misleading lifestyle image of upcoming LEGO Star Wars set 75371 Chewbacca, which teases pieces that don’t exist.

A close-up image of the buildable Wookiee’s satchel suggests that the ball joints used for his bandolier – previously colour-locked to light and dark grey – will finally be available in an alternate hue come September 1, when 75371 Chewbacca launches alongside multiple LEGO Star Wars sets based on the upcoming Ahsoka TV series. But they’re only dark brown in that one image: in a 360-degree video of the character, they’re grey as usual.

The LEGO Group has now confirmed via the LEGO Ambassador Network that the recoloured ball joint elements are an ‘error in photo editing’, and that the final product will indeed include grey pieces as standard. That’s bad news for anyone still hoping that the mistake might have been in the other direction (despite the edits being pretty obvious if you know to look for them), and means that the smallest joints – first introduced in the Mixels theme – will stay colour-locked for now.

The image in question was only available through the set’s official press release, and has never been visible through the product landing page on LEGO.com. If you head to the LEGO Newsroom and download the assets for the latest story, though, you’ll still be able to find it: the LEGO Group hasn’t taken it down, and nor has it explained how the error came about in the first place.

This is only the latest in a string of recent LEGO Star Wars errors, including a misleading rangefinder rendering on the box art of 75345 501st Clone Troopers Battle Pack – which the company has admitted ‘doesn’t reflect the finished product’ – and the duplicitous removal of the mould mark in 75355 X-wing Starfighter’s printed 8×16 plaque.

75371 Chewbacca is available to pre-order now for £179.99 / $199.99 / €209.99, and will start shipping from September 1.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
