LEGO’s rumoured Da Vinci set already feels repetitive
Another LEGO set based on Leonardo da Vinci is rumoured to be dropping in summer 2026, but it already feels a bit repetitive.
Da Vinci has already had two sets based on his work hit shelves. 31213 Mona Lisa dropped in October 2024, while 10363 Leonardo da Vinci’s Flying Machine went on sale on January 1, 2025, complete with a Leonardo da Vinci minifigure.

However, just 15 months after the latest Da Vinci release, it is rumoured we will be seeing 40902 Tribute to Leonardo da Vinci. The set’s name suggests a smaller-scale build, similar in concept to gift-with-purchase tributes such as 40530 Jane Goodall Tribute or 40690 Tribute to Jules Verne’s Books.
Michelangelo, another Italian sculptor and painter from the High Renaissance, would make for a much more inventive and fresh set. Not only is he a different historical figure, but he has also appeared as a minifigure before.
In 2014’s The LEGO Movie, Michelangelo appears as one of the Master Builders in Cloud Cuckoo Land. He is one of the few Master Builders in The LEGO Movie who was never released in a physical set or included in 71004 The LEGO Movie Series. He also appeared in both The LEGO Movie video games.

And although it has been 12 years since his debut, with the LEGO Group’s renewed focus on famous Renaissance figures, now feels like the perfect time to bring him back. This could be done in several ways.
A LEGO set of a workshop featuring miniature sculptures and printed painting tiles would look fantastic. In a similar style to the gift-with-purchase set 40595 Tribute to Galileo Galilei, Michelangelo would fit nicely. That format could also suit the rumoured Da Vinci set, given its name.

There is also the possibility of a recreation of 31208 Hokusai – The Great Wave, but with a section of the roof of the Sistine Chapel, one of Michelangelo’s most famous works. Though 31213 Mona Lisa arrived without a Da Vinci minifigure, it would be a missed opportunity not to include Michelangelo’s minifigure here, especially as one already exists in animated form.

However, the best and most likely set we could receive is the Statue of David in Florence. As one of the most famous sculptures of all time, it feels like the perfect way for the LEGO Group to introduce Michelangelo. Obviously, there is a certain delicate part of the statue the LEGO Group would not depict, but that could be covered with a leaf.
Whatever the LEGO Group designs, a new Renaissance artist feels like a much stronger choice than another rehash of Leonardo da Vinci. It would be much better to see the LEGO Group find new and inventive ways to showcase historical figures such as Michelangelo, particularly ones they already have design precedent for.
However, if you are still interested in a bit of Leonardo da Vinci, 10363 Leonardo da Vinci’s Flying Machine is still available online and in-store for £54.99 / $49.99 / €59.99, while 31213 Mona Lisa retails for £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99.
