LEGO BrickLink Designer Program Series 4 Medieval Seaside Market review
LEGO BrickLink Designer Program Series 4’s Medieval Seaside Market is a wonderfully detailed and endlessly modular castle set that should appeal to any fans of this classic theme.
With a level of decadence and detail usually only reserved for fan-designed builds, Medieval Seaside Market is one of five sets available for crowdfunding as part of Series 4 of the BrickLink Designer Program. The set may appear straightforward, but there’s a lot more content in the box than spotted at first glance – although this does lead to the occasional anxiety-inducing moment during building when bricks don’t feel as fully supported as would usually be common.

More than just a castle

The BrickLink Designer Program is an unorthodox offering from the LEGO Group: LEGO fans are encouraged to submit their own designs for LEGO sets, five of which in each series are selected for a limited run of 30,000 units, sold via crowdfunding.
Because of a popular vote element of the selection process, these sets invariably reflect the hardcore LEGO fandom’s deepest desires. Apparently, these desires mostly centre around castles, as almost every series of the BrickLink Designer Program has featured at least one castle design.
With Series 4, there are in fact two sets: Medieval Seaside Market, and Siege Encampment. Of the two, Medieval Seaside Market appears to be a little more traditional at first glance because it has a familiar castle design at its core, but it would be a mistake to write this set off as simply another in a long line of fan-designed castle sets.
Endlessly modular

One of the big innovations with Medieval Seaside Market is the extent to which it can be rearranged and repositioned. Each chunk of battlement connects to its neighbours with Technic pins, meaning that if you don’t love the default arrangement, you have plenty of other options for laying out the scene in whichever way you prefer.
This in and of itself isn’t completely unheard of, although most LEGO sets don’t feature quite as many options when it comes to rearranging modular chunks. What really elevates Medieval Seaside Market, though, is the array of options beyond those stated on the instructions that come in the box.
Fan designer Gonza (better known as ‘bricks_fan_uy’) has provided a complete set of alternative building instructions for the model, which are already available on Rebrickable for anyone who wants to strip the entire thing down to its individual elements and build a completely different marketplace.
While it wasn’t possible to review this alternative build in its entirety, this alternative option makes Medieval Seaside Market feel like a treasure trove of innovative ideas. For those who love a good LEGO castle, this one is more than just the sum of its parts and should you keep entertained for a good while longer than many other LEGO sets.
Spicy construction

To take a casual glance at Medieval Seaside Market, the set looks like a logical continuation of the kind of design aesthetic found with sets such as 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle: a logical step up from classic Castle design, but relatively straightforward compared to some of the other, more detailed and more complex castle sets that have turned up in previous BrickLink Designer Program series.
While this is by no means the most complex castle build of all time, the set’s construction does end up being surprisingly precarious at times. It’s not that the set has a lot of difficult building techniques, but more that not everything is anchored fully in early stages of construction. There are typically rules around how LEGO designers can put a set together to make sure pieces aren’t jutting out awkwardly without support, and it’s rare, for example, for instructions to tell a builder to stack several bricks on top of each other in a wobbly tower.
One of the more interesting consequences of the BrickLink Designer Program’s emphasis on letting fan designers try their best is that some sets end up feeling a little less secure or stable than would be the case with a set that’s benefitted from the combined wisdom of a full team of full-time LEGO designers, and Medieval Seaside Market is no exception. While the build is sturdy enough once completed, there are a few hair-raising moments during construction that may trigger some seasoned LEGO builders’ deep-seated anxieties.
As far as downsides go, though, this is a minor concern that passes quickly, and it’s hardly enough to put anyone off building such a delightfully detailed LEGO set. Its array of minifigures breathes even more life into a model that already feels alive simply by virtue of how it can organically rearrange into so many different configurations, and the end result is a set that will keep you engaged throughout the build and then some – and could even inspire you to add your own modules…
Our honest opinion: LEGO BrickLink Designer Program Medieval Seaside Market is a fabulous set that brims with character and life, and is a welcome addition to any LEGO castle fan’s collection.
