LEGO SMART Play rumoured for ‘more themes’ in 2027

First Star Wars, then Pokémon. What's next?

LEGO SMART Play rumoured for ‘more themes’ in 2027

Rumour has it that LEGO SMART Play will continue to expand beyond Star Wars next year, after a rocky start to the range.

Instagram user a.clay.brick has claimed (through a Story) that the LEGO Group's SMART Play platform is coming to 'more themes' in 2027 alongside more Star Wars SMART Play models. SMART Play is already scheduled to land in LEGO Pokémon later this year, but any further releases within the system have yet to be announced.

LEGO SMART Play was revealed earlier in 2026 as a major undertaking for the LEGO Group that has been in development for years. The idea is to use technology to enhance standard LEGO play through the Bluetooth-based BrickNet protocol, which activates certain responses in the SMART Brick when chip-integrated SMART Tags and minifigures are nearby.

“For over 90 years, the LEGO Group has sparked imagination and creativity in children around the globe. As the world evolves, so do we— innovating to meet the play needs of each new generation. LEGO SMART Play is the next exciting chapter in our LEGO System in Play and something we are super excited about being able to bring to the world at this scale,” said Julia Goldin, Chief Product & Marketing Officer of the LEGO Group.

Early reactions before the first SMART Play sets were launched were cautious, to say the least, and those models are currently available in only six countries. Since the launch of the first SMART Play models, reactions have been more mixed. Older enthusiasts aren't quite captivated by the concept, and while younger fans find a lot to enjoy, we found that they tend to be playing more with LEGO sets as they would normally.

The limited launch of these models may be a way of testing the waters and seeing what needs to be improved or changed before a wider launch. In LEGO Pokémon's case, this means that many of that theme's first models (and the creatures within them) won't be available to most of the world, leaving fans outside of the six SMART Play regions with just the 18+ Pokémon builds.

The LEGO Star Wars SMART Play sets have seen some deep discounts since their launch, including this week. This has mostly covered the expansion sets, with much lower discounts on the sets featuring the all-important SMART Brick. Whether this will continue with the upcoming Pokémon models remains to be seen, but all logic suggests some quick price reductions on those after they launch in August.

Overall, SMART Play has had a rocky start, but wider availability is one of its biggest issues at present. Expanding the list of countries where it is available to experience, and bringing it to more themes would at least allow wider reception of the new platform.

Rumours suggest that the latter is at least coming next year, but take this with caution for now. You can find an assortment of LEGO Star Wars SMART Play sets on shelves now, including 75421 Darth Vader's TIE Fighter. More SMART Play models will be released for Pokémon this August, including two new releases with a SMART Brick.
