LEGO Sonic might not be in 2024 sets – but that’s a good thing

From what we know about the future of LEGO Sonic in 2024, it doesn’t look like the Blue Blur will appear – but we should be glad of that.

Three LEGO Sonic sets are now confirmed for 2024, thanks to listings from both the LEGO Group and online retailer Lucky Bricks. This includes a flurry of new characters coming to the theme as minifigures, with Shadow, Knuckles and Rouge all making their debut next year. This leaves a noticeable Sonic-shaped hole in the film, with no new sets including the Blue Blur.

Of course, there are still six other sets that include a minifigure of Sonic that you can pick up if you’re keen to get your hands on the long-awaited minifigure. Indeed, the variety of minifigures is impressive for such a new theme and will help LEGO Sonic avoid a problem that character-focused themes have dealt with in the past.

Any long-term collectors of themes like LEGO Harry Potter, where many sets are centred around one character, will know the pain of having dozens, if not hundreds, of minifigures of the same character. There may well be some worthwhile differences (adult Harry versus Boy Harry, for example) or unique outfits (Harry Potter – Triwizard Uniform, complete with flippers) but more often than not, you end up with far too many of the same minifigure, or ones with differences so slight you can hardly notice. The names of some of these minifigures betray the depths that need to be plumbed to come up with new designs. Who really needs Harry Potter – Dark Bluish Gray Gryffindor Cardigan Sweater Open over Shirt without Wrinkles, Black Legs, after all?

Looking at LEGO Sonic, however, perhaps the LEGO Group is helping fans of the theme avoid such a scenario. If you’re keen to pick up the very first LEGO set featuring Shadow, you’ll get his minifigure and his minifigure alone in 76995 Shadow the Hedgehog Escape, without an extra Sonic thrown in for good measure. Similarly, two brand new minifigures debut in 76996 Knuckles’ Guardian Mech, including a pretty deep cut in Rogue.

Rogue the Bat has made an appearance in multiple LEGO Sonic games but has more of a cult following. She’s certainly lesser known than the big three that LEGO Sonic started with (Sonic, Tails, and Amy). For a theme that’s just a year old, the LEGO Group seems to be keen to provide variety in its minifigures, moving into the lesser-known regions early on in the theme’s lifetime.

All in all, the LEGO Sonic 2024 sets highlight progression in the theme, with the models forging into new territory. Instead of buying new sets and getting repeat minifigures and parts, each one offers something new and fresh. Looking forward, it’s a good time to be a fan of the Blue Blur and his brick-built friends.
