A dedicated SpongeBob SquarePants fanbase has voiced its opinions on two upcoming LEGO sets based on a certain denizen of a pineapple under the sea.
A pair of upcoming LEGO SpongeBob SquarePants sets were revealed yesterday, with the beloved Nickelodeon animated character and his aquatic friends returning after a 14-year hiatus. That news has been embraced by the majority of SpongeBob SquarePants’ fanbase, with many voicing their excitement to see the return of Stephen Hillenburg’s iconic creation.
“I honestly rolled my eyes when I heard they were bringing back SpongeBob with a $200 set, but wow they certainly justified the larger scale," exclaimed NoNefariousness2144 on Reddit regarding 11386 SpongeBob SquarePants: Bikini Bottom. “The buildings look incredible and like they are literally plucked out of the show.”
“I missed the previous SpongeBob sets so I was really hoping this would turn out well,” added fellow Redditor AllHailNwoo, “and it’s so much better than I’d thought it would be, definitely a set I’ll be saving up for. I feel like the designer must be a big fan of the show or at least have done their homework. I mean, DoodleBob? Squidward’s self-portrait?”
"Yeah. this is outrageously good looking," chipped in Ok-Range6568. "One of the best licensed sets LEGO has ever put out. This may be a day 1 purchase."
Of course, not everyone is foaming at the mouth to see the return of SpongeBob SquarePants in brick form, with some critical fans bemoaning certain aspects of the LEGO Icons model.
“Mr. Krabs would absolutely weep tears of pure joy seeing LEGO charge two hundred and twenty real-world dollars for a plastic rendition of the exact street SpongeBob and Squidward live on,” commented Curious Rey on X (formerly Twitter).
“$220 for SpongeBob LEGO? Bro, my rent isn’t even paying itself and this pineapple better come with a mortgage plan. Worth it for the nostalgia though,” stated Goalism.
However, it’s 40858 SpongeBob SquarePants Figure that’s come in for some real vitriol, with the proportions of the LEGO BrickHeadz build being the major sticking point for the wider fan community.
“The brick head is hilarious,” said Bob_Horde on Reddit. “I guess they wanna be ultra committed to the style, but that ruins it cause it’s so vertical when it needed to be wider. At the very least making it shorter would’ve gone a long way.”
“How can you literally screw up the proportion of a brick head in a line called BrickHeadz?” said Redditor BeholdAndWonder. “They could make him 2 blocks thick and use the extra pieces for a BrickHeadz style little Garry instead.”
“I'm sorry, this is the worst Brickheadz they've ever done and there have been some stinkers!” said PenPlays on X. “I get trying to keep a uniform identity for the Brickheadz line like Funko POPs do, but even they did a custom shape for SpongeBob.”
