LEGO Star Wars 5008818 Battle of Yavin GWP review

5008818 Battle of Yavin is a curious LEGO Star Wars collectible available this May the 4th as part of a collection of gifts-with-purchase.

Available from May 1 to 5 while stocks last, 5008818 Battle of Yavin is being awarded with LEGO Star Wars purchases of £80 / $90 / €90 at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores.

That spend threshold will also qualify you to receive a free polybag, 30680 AAT, while increasing the spend to £145 / $160 / €160 would see you also receive gift-with-purchase 40686 Trade Federation Troop Carrier, again while stocks last.

Those other two promotional items to one side, 5008818 Battle of Yavin sits as a truly unique collectible. Sort of following in the footsteps of recent May the 4th promotions that have given us Han Solo and Beskar-inspired metal key chains, as well as last year’s Death Star-themed collectible coin, 5008818 Battle of Yavin takes things in a slightly different direction.

It looks like a coin, and it sort of is one, except for this extra piece of metal across the top third that holds a moveable clear piece of plastic on it. That plastic has a red outline of an X-Wing on it, and it can line up perfectly with the X-Wing engraved into the coin underneath.

The effect is unexpected but cleverly mimics the view from a TIE Fighter chasing down an X-Wing in the Death Star trench and holding it in its targets. Full marks for creativity and full marks for presentation, as it comes in a very fancy box that slides open from the middle to reveal the token.

Ultimately, it continues the collection of mid-range oddities that May the 4th has been producing as a promotional period each year of late, and for the spend there’s enough quality and uniqueness here to feel good value.

5008818 Battle of Yavin is available from May 1 to 5, while stocks last, awarded with LEGO Star Wars purchases of £80 / $90 / €90 at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores. Head here to check out all the LEGO May the 4th 2024 deals.
