LEGO Super Mario rumoured summer 2023 sets could break the mould

The first rumoured LEGO Super Mario sets for summer 2023 could break the mould for the interactive theme, with seemingly no new Starter Course or Character Packs on the cards.

Since 2020, the LEGO Group’s first partnership with Nintendo has brought us a new digital figure every summer, along with two new series of collectible, blind-boxed characters per year. But according to Instagram user lego_minecraft_goat, none of the boxes for the summer 2023 sets resemble the packaging typically given to LEGO Super Mario Character Packs and Starter Courses.

That’s only across six sets at the moment, numbered 71420 through 71425, so there’s always a chance that 71426, 71427 and so on could bring us the annual Starter Course, complete with a new digital figure (such as Wario, Waluigi or Donkey Kong). But – hear us out here – there’s an equally good chance that these sets could represent a major change in direction for the LEGO Super Mario theme, namely towards minifigure-scale models.

It’s an approach the community has been crying out for since the theme was first unveiled in 2020, but next year could provide the perfect excuse to mix things up with the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The animated film, which stars Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy and Jack Black, arrives in cinemas in April, and would give the LEGO Group the ideal opportunity to capitalise with a range of movie-specific minifigure-scale sets.

Whether that’s what we’re looking at here remains uncertain, as does the veracity of these piece counts generally speaking. For now, take this list with a grain of salt.
