Licensed LEGO Collectible Minifigures series rumoured for September 2023

Next year’s third LEGO Collectible Minifigures series – and potentially the first in the theme’s new packaging – will apparently be a licensed range of characters.

The first Collectible Minifigures release confirmed for 2023 is 71037 Series 24, which launches on January 1, while a series linked to Disney’s 100th anniversary is rumoured for May. Instagram user exabrickslegogo_ now reports that a licensed series will arrive on shelves in September 2023, though details beyond that are thin on the ground at the moment – including exactly which licence it’s expected to be based on.

Obvious candidates include the two superheroes themes, following up 71026 DC Super Heroes and 71031 Marvel Studios, and the Wizarding World, which last received a Collectible Minifigures series in 2020. But the LEGO Group has also brought us brand new licensed series over the past couple of years in 71030 Looney Tunes and 71033 The Muppets, so that third series could also conceivably be something completely unexpected.

In any case, it’s likely that the third LEGO Collectible Minifigures 2023 series – whatever it ends up being – will be the first in the theme’s new cardboard packaging, which the LEGO Group says will replace the current foil bags by September 2023. That will make it impossible to identify the character prior to purchasing (through the good old bag fondling method we all use now), making the minifigures a truly blind buy for the first time.

Take them with a grain of salt for now, but if these rumours are true, 2023 will mark a return to the pattern established in 2016 of one in-house series and two licensed series per year. 2022 broke that mould with the release of 71032 Series 22, 71033 The Muppets and 71034 Series 23, but it may only have been a temporary hiatus. Here’s a look at the landscape for 2023…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
