Live-action LEGO NINJAGO movie prompts memes and warnings
News of a script being ordered for a live-action LEGO NINJAGO movie has drawn mixed reactions online, including a mix of memes and warnings.
A second, live-action LEGO NINJAGO movie might just be in our future as it is one of four scripts that have been ordered according to a recent report from Deadline. Live-action movies based on LEGO are already an interesting choice but NINJAGO specifically has an extensive animated history and even an initial movie that was animated in a stop-motion style.
It’s unexpected news for the NINJAGO community and their reaction to the announcement has been unexpected, with many concerned about a live-action approach to a solely animated franchise and others advising to keep expectations in check but not judge its potential just yet.
As you might expect, the news prompted several memes from the community, including multiple involving Jack Black after his casting in the 2025 Minecraft live-action movie. KingPenguinPheonix on Reddit similarly compares a live-action NINJAGO film to the Minecraft movie, commenting: “Can’t wait for everyone to dunk on the first trailer like they did for the Minecraft Movie.”
No cast has been announced for the film just yet and as lhikin warns, only a script has been ordered from previous NINJAGO writers Dan and Kevin Hageman at the time of writing. Whether the film will move beyond this stage is not confirmed. Three other scripts for live-action LEGO movies have been ordered from Jumanji’s Jake Kasdan, Wonder Woman and Rogue Squadron’s Patty Jenkins, Hot Fuzz’s Joe Cornish too and hopefully at least one of them moves forward.
Some are more positive about the potential live-action movie, including Six on X who compares a live-action LEGO NINJAGO movie to a family-friendly take on Mortal Kombat.
Portal Master Cody on Reddit shares a similar sentiment, stating: “This might either be good or be the worst thing ever, the only unlicensed LEGO themes I can see being live-action and working are Friends and Elves. But if Dan and Kevin Hageman are coming back to write it, I have a bit of hope for the writing.”
“Live action sounds like a bad idea, it should be animated but just kept relevant to the actual lore and continuity of the show and not completely relegate all the ninjas except Lloyd to the background.” shares a less-confident _Xeron_ referencing The LEGO NINJAGO Movie.
While reactions appear to be mixed overall, the best advice going into the future of this project is to keep expectations lower right now just in case as it’s hard to judge such a movie’s potential based solely on the news that a script has been ordered.
