One of the few LEGO Harry Potter sets so far inspired by the Deathly Hallows, 76403 The Ministry of Magic recreates Harry, Ron and Hermione’s infiltration of the wizarding government in the first part of the saga’s finale. That means the nine-strong minifigure line-up consists of characters including Arthur Weasley, Corban Yaxley, Pius Thicknesse and Dolores Umbridge – along with all three of the main trio in their disguises.

Thanks to smart reversible heads and spare hairpieces, you can actually display Harry, Ron and Hermione either as Albert Runcorn, Mafalda Hopkirk and Reg Cattermole or as their original selves. The set also includes a Dementor and Mary Cattermole, rounding out a packed minifigure line-up that covers pretty much every base from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I.

And that’s all before we get to the build, which is pretty magical in and of itself. The 990-piece model recreates the ministry’s towering headquarters as a folding façade, which can open to reveal interior rooms and an extended display piece. It’s constructed around the ministry’s iconic fountain (complete with gold statue), and is filled with magical details – from Umbridge’s Patronus cat to a pair of decoy detonators.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
