More details on rumoured LEGO Harry Potter Gringotts 2023 D2C

More details have surfaced on this year’s rumoured LEGO Harry Potter Gringotts direct-to-consumer set, teasing a potential piece count and release date.

News of the long-awaited addition to the Wizarding World theme first emerged in January, with initial reports claiming it will be numbered 76417 and carry a price tag of $429.99. That’s above and beyond the entirety of 75978 Diagon Alley, implying the bank will either be wildly out of scale with the rest of the shopping street’s buildings, or contain a huge underground structure for its vaults.

Instagram user lego_insider_news now reports that 76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank will include a total of 4,804 pieces, and ‘should include’ both the subterranean railway system and the Ukrainian Ironbelly dragon that guards the vaults. We’d expect nothing less for the rumoured scope of the set, but it’s worth noting that its piece count is actually smaller than 75978 Diagon Alley’s 5,544 bricks – for more money.

Putting aside the generally spiralling cost of LEGO sets, that could also be due to a higher volume of larger and more costly pieces. You know, things like… roller coaster track and dragon wings. As with any rumour, we can’t put too much stock in the finer details – nor even the bigger picture, because there’s still no confirmation we’re getting Gringotts at all in 2023.

If it does transpire as suggested, it’s apparently due to arrive on shelves on September 1. But that is the same release window as all four previous LEGO Harry Potter direct-to-consumer sets – 71043 Hogwarts Castle, 75978 Diagon Alley, 76391 Hogwarts Icons Collectors’ Edition and 76405 Hogwarts Express Collectors’ Edition – so it isn’t exactly a revelatory prediction.

More surprising is that – at least according to lego_insider_news – 76417 Gringotts Wizarding Bank will be accompanied by a Gringotts vault gift-with-purchase. The LEGO Harry Potter theme is no stranger to GWPs, but they’ve never really been tied so thematically to specific sets. And you’ve got to imagine the bank itself will incorporate at least one or two vaults, so it’s tricky to imagine what an extra GWP could offer.

Take this rumour with the customary grain of salt for now, but you can check out an updated rundown of the LEGO Harry Potter 2023 slate as it stands in the table below.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
