Two LEGO Harry Potter D2Cs rumoured for 2023 – Gringotts, Knight Bus

LEGO Harry Potter is rumoured to be doubling the rate at which it launches direct-to-consumer sets in 2023 – and one of those models will apparently be a $430 Gringotts Bank.

The latest list of rumoured LEGO Harry Potter summer 2023 sets is headlined by two stand-out releases: 76417 Gringotts Bank, said to be retailing for $429.99, and 76419 The Knight Bus, which will reportedly include 2,260 pieces. The exact identity of the latter set is apparently a bit murkier, but Promobricks suggests it could be a larger rendition of the triple-decker wizarding transport.

Either way, that’s two very large LEGO Harry Potter sets within a single calendar year, bucking the trend for the Wizarding World theme. Since returning to shelves in 2018, we’ve had one direct-to-consumer set per year (with the exception of 2019), as per the table below:

LEGO setPricePiecesRelease date
71043 Hogwarts Castle£409.99 / $469.99 / €469.996,020September 1, 2018
75978 Diagon Alley£389.99 / $449.99 / €449.995,544September 1, 2020
76391 Hogwarts Icons Collectors’ Edition£259.99 / $299.99 / €299.993,010September 2, 2021
76405 Hogwarts Express Collectors’ Edition£429.99 / $499.99 / €499.995,129August 31, 2022

If the rumoured list of summer 2023 sets is correct, it means we’re looking at twice the usual number of D2Cs within a single calendar year. That would bring the LEGO Harry Potter theme in line with the likes of LEGO Star Wars, which usually enjoys two Ultimate Collector Series or Master Builder Series sets per year, perhaps pointing to the strength of the market for the Wizarding World line.

It wouldn’t be the only theme to have seen an uptick in larger sets lately, though: a whopping three different LEGO Marvel sets came in at over 2,000 pieces in 2022, including 76210 Hulkbuster, 76215 Black Panther and 76218 Sanctum Sanctorum. If anything, a bump in the number of larger licensed sets is really only reflective of the wider boom in bigger models across the entire LEGO portfolio.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
