My LEGO shopping plan for August 1: Getting more bang for my buck

Come August 1, I’ll be focusing my LEGO budget where I can get the most rewarding build experiences for the least amount of cash.

Before digging into what I’m actually buying on August 1, I have to make one recommendation of what I would be buying – if I didn’t already have it for review. 77237 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is one of the most enjoyable Speed Champions builds I’ve completed (and I’ve done a fair few this year). It’s a real breath of fresh air in terms of its build techniques (no stickers!) and it’s one that keeps catching my eye from its pride of place on my shelf.

Despite August 1 having a lot of tempting newcomers, I am trying to steady my LEGO balance, with one eye on the incoming 910049 Adventure in Transylvania from the BrickLink Designer Program. With that in mind, I want to get as much brick-built bang for my buck, opting for sets that I can get a lot of fun out of, without investing too much cash.

The first day-one purchase for me is LEGO Creator 3-in-1 31173 Tropical Toucan. It’s no secret that Creator has been a source of high-quality but well-priced builds, but it’s rare that one retailing for as low as £12.99 catches my eye. The colours make up for what’s likely a fairly simple build, and it’s an excellent blend of pastel and vibrant colours.

While the toucan has my heart, the butterfly is almost as enticing. Will it be enticing enough for me to pick up two copies so I can display both? Perhaps if there’s any GWPs that need an extra push to get…

My second guaranteed purchase is 10373 Mini Bonsai Trees. Like I said, I want to get as much as I can for my money – and this is three trees in one. Each one brings something new to the table (or plant pot) and I love how each one has its own unique style and colour scheme. When I did a comparison of them to the real plants, I was – as always with Botanicals – impressed with how simple LEGO bricks can accurately capture authentic details and 10373 Mini Bonsai Trees more so than any previous LEGO bonsais have.

My shopping list is fairly restrained, although I’m ready to be convinced to spend more there are some particularly tempting GWPs. What can I say, I’m a sucker for a good deal.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.

I bought 2 toucans as there are none live ones at all in Australia (not in zoos either) and its my favourite non Aussie bird type. This one is a mix of toucan and aracari birds and simply lovely. I have built one and will no doubt get a family, 5 maybe. You can’t have enough of them….a real gem of a set, a classic really.
