New LEGO Sonic set has more than meets the eye with one special Chaos Emerald

In one of the four new LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets coming in August, fans have spotted a subtle link back to the 2001 platform game Sonic Adventure 2.

We’ve already seen that every one of the four sets that’s been announced so far comes with at least one Chaos Emerald, but it seems that the links back to the Sonic video games run a little deeper than first anticipated.

In a reddit post discussing the reveal of the new sets, user Michael_the_Madlad spotted that the Chaos Emerald that comes with 76991 Tails’ Workshop and Tornado Plane is yellow – and it seems like that wasn’t a random decision.

The comment reads: “I love that Tails’ Laboratory includes the Yellow Chaos Emerald, as it is the same colour as the Fake Chaos Emerald he made back in Sonic Adventure 2!”

In Sonic Adventure 2, released back in 2001, Tails created the counterfeit Chaos Emerald to try and fool Dr Eggman, and stop him from using the Eclipse Cannon, which (as expected, really) would ensure the villain of the series could essentially take over the world.

In the cutscene that follows we see that unfortunately, Dr Eggman doesn’t get fooled by Tail’s fake Emerald, mostly because Tails accidentally gives it away. So by having the yellow Emerald in 76991 Tails’ Workshop and Tornado Plan, we can see a subtle level of detail within that LEGO set that was perhaps a little unexpected, but definitely nicely done.
