Five things we’ve spotted in the LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog 2023 sets

With four new sets announced for August 2023, we’ve spotted a few details in the LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets that hark back to the original 1991 game.

We first saw Sonic in LEGO form with 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone from LEGO Ideas last year, and from there rumours quickly started cropping up about a full theme. Now that the four new sets for this year have been released, let’s take a look at those finer details and see what has been added in that links back to the original lore from the Sonic games.

5 – Minifigure characters

The first obvious link-in gives us a few more iconic characters from the game series. We now have Sonic’s best friend Tails (whose name is actually Miles Prower, a pun on ‘miles per hour’), Amy (known for her less than secret crush on Sonic) and famous villain Dr Eggman. Amy comes with her Piko Piko Hammer, a powerful melee weapon in the game, and Tails comes with his Yellow Tail board. 76992 Amy’s Animal Rescue Island has Tails and Amy, 76994 Sonic’s Green Hill Zone Loop challenge has Amy and Dr Eggman, and lastly 76991 Tails’ Workshop and Tornado Plane has Tails (as the name would suggest).

4 – Animals

The Animals, who appeared as minor characters in the first Sonic game, have got their features in some of the new sets. In several Sonic games since then, the Animals (with names like Rocky, Pocky, Flicky and Picky) need to be saved in the various different levels, which you easily recreate with all four new LEGO sets.

3 – Chaos Emerald

Chaos Emeralds are fundamental to the Sonic universe, and it makes sense to have them in any LEGO Sonic set. 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone included all seven of the famous emeralds. So far, it looks like there’s at least one in all of the new sets.

2 – Chaos Cola

Chaos Cola, very evidently a reference to another famous soft drink brand, was seen advertised in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2. Here, we’ve got a little can included with both 76994 Sonic’s Green Hill Zone Loop Challenge and 76990 Sonic’s Speed Sphere Challenge, as well as a chili dog to really complete the meal.

1 – Sunflower

The sunflowers from the Green Hill Zone in Sonic are iconic across several forms of media, from being featured in Archie Comics to having a role in the plot of Sonic the Hedgehog: Scrapnik Island Issue 2. We see the famous sunflower in 76992 Amy’s Animal Rescue Island and also in 76994 Sonic’s Green Hill Zone Loop Challenge.

All four new LEGO Sonic sets will be available to purchase in August 2023.
